DOWN THE STRETCH
• Cash Call (Juan Hernandez riding), stretching out and stepping up after an optional-claiming-level romp, looks best of three Bob Baffert-trained 3-year-old fillies among seven in the Grade III Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita on Saturday. Leading trainer Phil D’Amato’s Thought Process (Hector Berrios), a winner at this level on turf, runs for the first time since fading in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Dean Pederson’s Our Moonlight (Tiago Pereira) could hit the board.
• Baffert has half of the four-horse field for the Affirmed Stakes on Sunday, with Gaming (Berrios) seeking his first win in six starts since the Del Mar Futurity in September.
• California horses are prominent in several races – beside the Belmont Stakes – at Saratoga. On Saturday, Baffert has 3-year-olds Citizen Bull (Mike Smith) and Madaket Road (John Velazquez) in the Woody Stephens sprint, Doug O’Neill’s Grade I-winning 4-year-old Raging Torrent (Frankie Dettori) faces Fierceness and White Abarrio in the Met Mile, and Richard Baltas’ 5-year-old mare Ag Bullet (Flavien Prat) seeks a cleaner trip in the Jaipur turf sprint. On Friday, Michael McCarthy’s 3-year-old filly Look Forward (Umberto Rispoli) runs in Friday’s Grade I Acorn.
• Nysos earned a Beyer speed figure of 108 by covering 7 furlongs in 1:21.28 in the 4-year-old colt’s 5¼-length win in the Triple Bend Stakes on Saturday. That’s tied for the eighth on the Daily Racing Form’s Beyer leaderboard in 2025, a list headed by the 110s for two other sprints, the 4-year-old filly Kopion’s Santa Monica Stakes at Santa Anita and the 6-year-old gelding Skelly’s Lake Hamilton Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
• Gulfstream Park announcer Pete Aiello will fill in at Santa Anita from Friday through Sunday while Frank Mirahmadi is away to call the five-day Belmont Stakes festival at Saratoga.
• Santa Anita’s 5½-month winter-spring season ends next week with racing Thursday (added to the original calendar) through Sunday.
• The death of the 4-year-old quarter-horse gelding Mr Favorite Jess, the result of an injury in an allowance-level race at Los Alamitos on May 31, is the 16th attributed to musculoskeletal and other causes in racing and training at Los Al and Santa Anita since the start of the Santa Anita season Dec. 26, according to an unofficial count based on data from the California Horse Racing Board website. That’s more than the 15, 14, 15 and 14 deaths in the same period the past four years, but it’s fewer than the 24 from Jan. 1-June 4, 2020, when the CHRB began listing horse deaths on its site.
• Top threats to win England’s 19-horse Epsom Derby on Saturday include Aidan O’Brien-trained Delacroix, The Lion in Winter and Lambourn, Charlie Appleby’s Ruling Court, Ralph Beckett’s Pride of Arras, and John and Thady Gosden’s Damysus. O’Brien sent the past two Epsom Derby winners to the Breeders’ Cup later in those years, Auguste Rodin winning the 2023 Turf as 5-2 favorite at Santa Anita and City of Troy finishing eighth in the 2024 Classic as 7-2 second choice at Del Mar. The Breeders’ Cup is at Del Mar again Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
