Howard Stern is offering an update on Billy Joel’s health.
“I saw Billy Joel two weeks ago [and] we had dinner together,” Stern, 71, said on the Tuesday, June 3, episode of his eponymous radio show. “He’s doing fine. He does have issues, but he said, ‘Yeah, you can tell people I’m not dying.’ He wants people to know that. He’s got to deal with some medical stuff.”
According to Stern, it “was delightful” to catch up with Joel, 76.
“We had a great time with the wives,” the radio personality added, referring to wife Beth Stern and Joel’s spouse, Alexis Roderick Joel. “We had a great conversation. I was telling him [that] I’m enjoying playing classical music on the guitar. He lit up because that’s what he’s into. It was even his birthday, so I brought out the guitar and sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to him.”
Billy Joel Cancels All Tour Dates After Brain Disorder Diagnosis
Billy announced last month that he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain disorder, and needed to cancel his upcoming tour in order to recover.
“This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance,” Billy’s May 23 statement read. “Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during the recovery period.”
The statement continued, “Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can, once again, take the stage.”
In a personal message shared at the end of the letter, the legendary musician stressed that he was “sincerely sorry” to disappoint his fans but thanked them “for understanding.”

As Billy recuperates, he’s been supported by wife Alexis, 43, his children — he shares two daughters with Alexis and eldest daughter Alexa Ray with ex-wife Christie Brinkley — and their loved ones.
“Thank you for the outpouring of love and support,” Alexis wrote via Instagram on May 26. “We are so grateful for the wonderful care and swift diagnosis we received. Bill is beloved by so many, and to us, he is a father and husband who is at the center of our world. We are hopeful for his recovery. We look forward to seeing you all in the future.”
Brinkley, 71, also rallied around her ex-husband.
“Dear Billy, the whole Brinkley gang is sending you lots of love and good wishes for a full and speedy recovery,” she wrote via Instagram on May 24. “I’m sure I’m speaking for everyone in that room when I say, please take good care of yourself, we all want you back in that white hot spotlight. You’re OUR piano man — and we’re always in the mood for your melodies, and we all hope you’re feeling alright!”
