    Scotland v Iceland prediction

Friday night sees Scotland play the first of their two friendlies in the current international window, with Steve Clarke’s side hosting Iceland in front of their home fans before making the trip to Liechtenstein for a game on Monday night.

These two outings will be Scotland’s final matches before their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign gets underway, with Clarke’s men looking to end 28 years of hurt having not reached a World Cup since 1998.

Clarke’s side will be returning to action for the first time since their Nations League play-off which ended in relegation after 3-1 aggregate loss to Greece, despite winning the opening leg in Athens.

The Scots have lost only one of their last five matches in all competitions though, winning three of their last four, which includes wins over Greece, Croatia Poland and a 0-0 draw with Portugal, so will have their tails up after a strong finish to 2024.

Scotland will have the opportunity for revenge against the Greeks in their World Cup qualifying campaign, having been drawn into a group with them as well as Denmark and Belarus, with the first placed finishers qualifying directly for next summer’s finals in Canada, the USA and Mexico, and the second placed finishers advancing to the play-offs.

Iceland start their mini tour of the United Kingdom with Friday’s match in Glasgow before crossing the Irish Sea for a friendly in Belfast against Northern Ireland on Tuesday night.

Like Scotland, these two games will be the final preparation for Iceland before their World Cup qualifying campaign begins in September, with Arnar Gunnlaugsson’s side drawn into a tricky group with France, Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

The Icelandics will be looking to reach just their second ever World Cup having qualified for Russia 2018 but missed out on Qatar four years later, and will be bidding to reach North America next summer.

Iceland make the trip to Glasgow in a bad run of form, having lost their Nations League play-off against Kosovo which resulted in relegation to the third tier of the competition for the next cycle of games, losing home and away, 5-2 on aggregate, and were forced to play their home second leg in Spain due to construction on their only stadium back home that meets UEFA requirements.

Those defeats leaves Gunnlaugsson’s side with four defeats in their last five games and just one win in their last seven in all competitions, a run they will be looking to put right with their friendlies in the UK over the next few days.

Scotland have won all of their previous six matches against Iceland, most recently meeting in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, with Ross McCormack and Steven Fletcher on the scoresheet in a 2-1 win at Hampden Park.

Scotland will be strong favourites heading into their final home game before their World Cup qualifying campaign, with three wins in their last four games compared Iceland having won one of their last seven – a 2-0 home win seems a realistic scoreline for Friday night.
