Red Bull requests F1 superlicence exemption for Lindblad

Red Bull has reportedly requested an exemption to Formula 1’s superlicence age rule for its highly rated junior driver Arvid Lindblad, potentially opening the door for the 17-year-old to participate in an F1 Friday practice session ahead of his 18th birthday.

According to a report from Motorsport.com, the application will be reviewed during next week’s FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Macau.

While Red Bull’s driver lineup has drawn increased attention due to Max Verstappen sitting on 11 penalty points – just one fatal point away from a one-race ban – team advisor Helmut Marko clarified that Lindblad’s exemption request is unrelated as the request was lodged before Verstappen’s penalty situation became critical.

Nonetheless, the timing adds intrigue, as an approved exemption could expand Red Bull’s pool of drivers able to step in if needed.

    Why Lindblad Needs an Exemption

Currently competing in the FIA F1 Championship, Lindblad has already met the required threshold of superlicence points through strong performances in junior categories.

The British-Swedish driver sits third in the F2 standings with two race victories to his name, including a feature race win last weekend in Barcelona – an impressive feat in his rookie season.

However, under current FIA rules, drivers must be at least 18 years old to be granted a superlicence, a regulation introduced after Max Verstappen made his F1 debut at age 17. Lindblad turns 18 on August 8, shortly after the Hungarian Grand Prix and just before F1’s summer break.

    A Precedent Set by Mercedes

Red Bull’s request follows a similar move by Mercedes’ in 2024 when it filed for an exemption for its then junior driver Kimi Antonelli.

The updated article 13.1.2. of Appendix L now allows the FIA, at its discretion, to grant a superlicence to a 17-year-old who has shown “outstanding ability and maturity” in single-seater competition.

Lindblad’s performances this year suggest he fits that description, making him a strong candidate under the revised clause.

    A Strategic Option Amid Uncertainty

If approved, Lindblad could take part in F1 free practice sessions and be on standby to fill in for a Red Bull or Racing Bulls driver.

This would provide the team with additional flexibility, just in case, as Verstappen teeters on the edge of suspension. In a potential reshuffling, Lindblad could replace either Liam Lawson or Isack Hadjar at the sister team, should one of them be promoted to the senior Red Bull seat.

Even if the exemption is not granted, Lindblad will be eligible for a full superlicence shortly after his birthday in August, ensuring his free practice F1 opportunity is on the near horizon.
