Largest speciality retailer in the US cancels ‘grand opening’ for first time in 4 years – and fans ‘ditch the season’

The largest US speciality retailer has cancelled its “grand opening event” for the first time in four years – leaving fans devastated.

Spirit Halloween, known for its costumes and spooky decor, announced in late May that the cancellation was due to “international disruptions and supply chain challenges”.

In a post on Instagram captioned “Halloween never dies”, the seasonal retailer explained: “Unfortunately, international disruptions and supply chain challenges have thrown a wrench in our opening plans.

“As a result, we are forced to cancel the Egg Harbor Township grand opening event – but we intend to bring this event back next year.

“In the meantime, Spirit Halloween is still very much alive, with over 1,500 stores on track to open!

“We will begin opening stores in mid-August for another killer season…”

Thousands of disappointed fans flooded the comments on the post, which has garnered over 150,000 likes.

One user wrote: “Just stay open [all] year round. Problem solved.”

Another commented: “Is America ‘great again’ yet?”

Another user wrote: “You guys need to open much earlier than mid-August, I say July.”

Spirit Halloween was founded in 1983 and has since grown into the largest seasonal Halloween retailer in the US.

The company’s unique business model revolves around opening temporary stores for about 60 to 90 days leading up to Halloween.

It comes as the discount chain Aldi has announced a fresh slate of stores opening in June.

The US Sun reported on the 800 locations the retailer plans to open by 2028.

Aldi has already opened 40 new stores in the first half of 2025, and shows no signs of slowing down.

By the end of the year, Aldi is aiming to have opened 225 new locations.

If it hits this target, it will be Aldi’s biggest-ever year for new store openings in the US.

Meanwhile, discount retailer Ollie’s has announced plans to open at least 50 new locations by the end of the year.

The chain’s growth is fuelled in part by acquiring a total of 63 former Big Lots locations in February.
