Carlos Alcaraz makes crowd laugh as he issues apology after ‘perfect’ win

Carlos Alcaraz cheekily apologised for not giving tennis fans a lengthier contest.

The Spaniard demolished 12th seed Tommy Paul in just 94 minutes as he recorded a 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 victory in their quarter-final clash at the French Open.

Although no.2 seed Alcaraz was the heavy favourite going into the quarter-final clash, few inside Court Philippe-Chatrier would have envisaged the destruction about to unfold.

Alcaraz set the tone from the opening set as he clubbed 14 winners and lost just one point during his service games.

The 6-0 scoreline in the first set, which lasted just 30 minutes, marked the first time Alcaraz shut out Paul from their seven encounters.

Although Paul won a game in the second set, it was wrapped up in even quicker fashion.

It took 23 minutes for Alcaraz to move one set away from victory, with the Spaniard missing his first serve on just three occasions from 20.

Paul showed plenty of fight in the third but it only served to delay the inevitable as Alcaraz went on to comfortably beat the American for the fifth time.

Prior to his post-match interview, seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander described Alcaraz’s performance as the ‘perfect’ win.

But Alcaraz’s attention was on the crowd as he acknowledged the fact they wanted to see a more competitive contest than they were treated to.

“It’s always fun playing here in Paris,” Alcaraz said.

“I know the crowd wanted to watch more tennis so I have to say sorry about that. I had to do my work.

“But once again, it’s great to play in front of all of you. I just feel great because the energy is amazing match after match.

“Thank you so much for coming and supporting me.”

Alcaraz will now face Italian star Lorenzo Musetti, who reached the semi-final stage of a grand slam for just the second time in his career.

Musetti beat Frances Tiafoe in four sets to book his spot in the final four, although his win was laden with controversy given he kicked a ball at a line judge.

The Italian only received a warning for the offence, although many tennis fans kicked up a fuss on social media given Novak Djokovic committed a similar act at the US Open in 2020 but was disqualified.

As for Alcaraz, he is now into the semi-finals of the French Open for a third consecutive year.

“I always say that this tournament is so special to me,” Alcaraz said.

“Every time that I come here, every year it feels special.

“Before the tournament begins, I always think that I really want to go far in this tournament just to feel the energy of the people match after match.”
