Epsom Oaks runner by runner guide
Now, let’s delve into all nine runners and who will come out on top in the 2025 Epsom Oaks.
1 Desert Flower (1)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 1111-1 Rating: 117 Jockey: William Buick Trainer: Charlie ApplebyThis likeable filly has taken all before here in her five career starts to date and comes here on the back of yet another dominant display in the 1000 Guineas. She smacks of a superstar and one that has the class to win various trips, but on pedigree, 1m4f is not guaranteed to suit her.
However, given her class and how relaxed she is during her races, she will give herself every chance of seeing out the Oaks tips. She is clear on ratings and the one to beat if she stays this new trip.

5 Minnie Hauk (2)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 21-1 Rating: 100 Jockey: Ryan Moore Trainer: Aidan O’BrienHaving cost €1,850,000 at the Goffs Orby sale, this daughter of Frankel didn’t exactly set the world alight as a two-year-old. On her return to the track this season, she defied market weakness in the Cheshire Oaks to win comfortably in the end, but she looked far from the finished article.
The other slight negative for Minnie Hauk is that none of Aidan O’Brien’s Cheshire Oaks winners have gone on to win the Epsom Classic. With that said, there should be so much more to come from this impeccably bred filly, and given we know that she will stay the Oaks trip, she rates as a massive player here, even more so that she is the choice of Ryan Moore.

9 Whirl (9)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 511-61 Rating: 110 Jockey: Wayne Lordan Trainer: Aidan O’BrienIt was steady as we go for Whirl as a two-year-old, and she returned for her three-year-old season with a whimper. But she left her poor return well behind her when she stepped up to just over 1m2f in the Musidora Stakes, where she showed a massive jolt of improvement from the new trip.
She was dominant the whole way through the Misidora and had her closet rival toiling over five lengths behind in second. The form isn’t up to much, but the way she went through the race and put it to bed within a matter of strides was taking. The extra 2f should not be an issue for Whirl, and even though Ryan Moore prefers Minne Hauk, Whirl is the clear each-way pick here. At worst, she will place.

3 Giselle (3)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 213-1 Rating: 102 Jockey: Colin Keane Trainer: Aidan O’BrienThis big buzzy type already needs to find something to get the better of Whirl on their meeting last season, but the daughter Frankel was always going to be a better three-year-old.
She made her return in the Oaks Trial at Lingfield, where she made light work of two inferior rivals, but the glaring question is, how will she handle the preliminaries? She was taken down to the start early by Ryan Moore at Lingfield and didn’t exactly relax during the race, but her talent shone through, and she was never in any danger.
The mere fact the Ryan Moore has overlooked her, as well as Wayne Lordan, is a clear negative for the filly. The field size and pace of the race should help her settle, but if she gets too worked up before the flag is dropped, it could be race over before it even begins.

2 Elwateen (5)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 1-4 Rating: 108 Jockey: Jim Crowley Trainer: Saeed bin SuroorGoing on how well Elwateen ran in the 1000 Guineas on just her second career start shows you the potential that this filly has to unlock. She was supplemented for the Oaks at a cost of £30,000, so connections must be pleased with how she has come out following the Newmarket Classic.
Given her inexperience at Newmarket, she did well to lay up for as long as she did and was not stopping when she hit the finishing line. The step up in trip looks a big positive here, and it appears she will relish this test. If the lack of experience doesn’t get the better of her around the unique test that Epsom presents, then this daughter of Dubawi is a dark horse hiding in plain sight.

7 Revoir (6)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 1-2 Rating: 97 Jockey: Hector Crouch Trainer: Ralph BeckettHaving made a winning debut on heavy ground last season, Revior returned this season at listed level, where she failed to reel in Qilin Queen on good to firm ground. Greeness got the better of her at Newbury, and even though she is likely to take a step forward for the new trip, she will need to have learned a lot from her comeback run.
She is interesting, but others have already achieved significantly more than she has. That is not to say that she can not get to their level, but whether she can get there on Friday is the question.

8 Wemightakedlongway (8)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 313-51 Rating: 105 Jockey: Dylan Brown McMonagle Trainer: Joseph O’BrienThe Joseph O’Brien runner got the better of Minnie Hauk on her second career start and finished off last season with a respectable third in what was a weak enough Leopardstown Group 3.
She made her comeback in the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown, but she was friendless in the market and well-beaten by Derby favourite Delacroix, in the end finishing fifth. She showed the benefit of that run when making all in the Salsabil Stakes at Navan in April, but there is a glaring doubt over her stamina for the Oaks trip.
Her trainer, Joseph O’Brien, has already indicated that she may not be suited to 1m4f, but there is only one way to find out if it does, and there is no better place to find out than the Eposm Oaks. She can run well for a long way, but she doesn’t strike me as an Oaks filly.

6 Qilin Queen (7)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 312-31 Rating: 98 Jockey: Tom Marquand Trainer: Ed WalkerShe did well to hold on in the dying strides when holding off the fast-finishing Revoir at Newbury on her latest start, but it is easy to make a case that she will not be able to uphold that form here. Having already had five runs in her career at levels that are well below par with what is required to be a serious Oaks contender, it’s easy to overlook Qilin Queen here.
Star rating:
Bet on Qilin Queen with SBK
Go Go Boots (7)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 1-13 Rating: 99 Jockey: Oisin Murphy Trainer: John & Thady GosdenThere is every chance that Go Go Boots can improve for the step up in trip on just her fourth career start, but she has a mountain to climb to get near Whirl.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained filly left Go Go Boots over five lengths behind in the Musidora, and it is impossible to see her turning around that form with Whirl. She may go well for a long way, but Go Go Boots will find a few that are in a different league here.

Epsom Oaks verdict
With slight concerns over the trip for Desert Flower, the Oaks may be the time to take her on this season. Minnie Hauk receives the assistance of Ryan Moore, which is a significant advantage, but I see WHIRL being the best of the three Ballydoyle runners.
On the back of a dominant display in the Musidora, this step-up in trip looks sure to bring out even more improvement, and the daughter of Wootten Bassett may prove hard to beat. Elwateen is another who can take a big step forward over this trip, and she’s not ruled out.
