A CAR owner has shared a simple DIY fix for her vehicle that costs only $50 – ten times less than the repair quote she received from a shop.
Julia Lutz was baffled when she was told it would cost nearly $500 to swap out a cheap part, so she rolled up her sleeves and got to work.
Lutz, whose social media handle is @juleslutzz, told viewers the mechanic blamed expensive parts when she wanted to get her sun visor replaced.
But when she went home and checked on Amazon, the savvy driver said she found a nearly identical part for just $50, she said in a now-viral TikTok with 2.3 million views.
“About to watch probably like two TikToks, maybe a YouTube video. I’m going to replace this,” she told her followers.
Lutz noted that her new vizor also had lights on it, so she was giving her car an “upgrade.”
After watching a tutorial, she was able to pry the broken sun visor from her car’s roof using a screw driver.
Once the visor was off, she simply snapped in the new part and watched with glee as the lights came on.
Lutz said: “Wait, who did that? Me? Oh my God!”
“That is so amazing. $450 saved.”
Fellow TikTokers commenting under the video were seemingly aghast at the original price Lutz was quoted.
One person wrote: “Are these mechanics not embarrassed for overcharging like this? We need to start posting them so people know who to avoid.”
Another added: “$500 to snap something in place is insane!”
And a third commented: “Toyota quoted me $650 to replace my window regulator.
“I watched a YouTube video, bought the part for $50 and replaced it myself. It’s crazy because so many things are so easy to fix, yet they charge a ridiculous amount.”
A fourth joked: “Girl math you have $450 extra dollars to spend on something else.”
According to Daily Dot, around 92% of American households own a car, but a substantial portion are uncomfortable with even basic repairs.
What’s more, a 2018 study found that over half of respondents felt “intimidated” when dealing with a car mechanic.
But as Lutz demonstrated, a number of fixes can be performed with little or no assistance, while experts claim it’s easy to replace something like an air filter or change a car’s oil.
Experts have also warned about how to save money at the mechanic by always saying no to certain services.
Ron Krauch, an automotive writer, warned drivers not to trust everything they hear in the shop in an exclusive interview with The U.S. Sun.
He said dealer recommended services like fuel injecting and engines flushes should always be avoided.
How to save money at the mechanic
THERE are several services offered by mechanics that drivers should never pay for, according to a car expert.
Ron Krauch, an automotive writer, warned drivers not to trust everything they hear in the shop in an exclusive conversation with The U.S. Sun.
He said it’s important for vehicle owners to recognize the difference between their car’s manufacturer’s service schedule and what mechanics are trying to sell.
Any work referred to as a “dealer recommended service” is often an attempt at upselling, Krauch warned.
One of these useless upsells is fuel injecting clearing, which removes built-up dirt and debris from a vehicle’s fuel system to improve performance.
“Modern vehicles typically have fuel systems that are designed to stay clean, especially with the use of high-quality gasoline that contains detergents to keep injectors free of deposits,” he said.
Drivers should also always say no to engine flushes, as modern vehicles don’t need any help cleaning out “sludge or deposits.”
“Most modern engines and oils are formulated to stay clean, and if you regularly change your oil on schedule, you shouldn’t need this service,” he said.
And finally, no one should spend extra getting a premium oil change.
“Shops often upsell customers to synthetic or high-performance oils – even if the vehicle’s manufacturer doesn’t require them,” Krauch said.
