THREE major healthcare providers are closing 1,700 locations amid a deepening retail crisis.
The pharmacy giants blame changing consumer needs, buying habits, and population shifts for the closures.
CVS and Walgreens are shutting down hundreds of stores across the country amid growing financial pressures and changing consumer habits, while Rite Aid has filed for bankruptcy.
Rite Aid, one of the largest pharmacy chains in the US, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May, with some 316 stores now braced for closure.
Prior to this, the pharmacy operated 1,240 stores across 15 states.

The company cited massive debt and thousands of lawsuits related to its role in the opioid epidemic.
Since then, it has shuttered hundreds of stores and plans to close hundreds more in the months ahead.
According to CNN, Rite Aid is attempting to restructure and sell off remaining stores to rival chains to survive.
But in many communities – especially rural or underserved areas – that promise is already falling short.
Walgreens has revealed plans to close about 1,200 stores across the US as the pharmacy also battles a decline in consumer spending.
Until August 2025, the company estimates about 500 stores being shuttered.
The firm entered an agreement to be bought by a private equity firm and is expected to close the deal at the end of the year.
For CVS, nationwide store closures have been happening since 2022, when 900 shops were shuttered in just two years.
Company bosses said the closures were a means of betting meeting consumers’ needs and not in reaction to “industry pressures“.
They added that where the stores were most needed, the company will be opening new CVS shops.
A spokesperson said: “Even after the realignment work, 85% of people in the U.S. will still live within 10 miles of a CVS Pharmacy.”
While CVS hasn’t released a list of the stores set to close, locations with overlap or low footfall are expected to be the first one to go.
No timeline has been given yet either.
But it’s not all bad news as CVS is still expanding.
The company plans to open 30 new locations this year, including inside Target stores, and has added 100 new locations since 2022.
It comes after CVS confirmed it would be cutting around 2,900 jobs as bosses revealed they will be investing in technology.
the cuts will primarily impact those within the corporate sector, per the CBS affiliate WPRI-TV.
Mike DeAngelis, a spokesperson, explained that the job losses are a consequence of changing shopping trends, expectations, and disruption.
The cuts are part of a $2 billion cost-cutting drive intended to reduce business expenses.
Chiefs will also look at ways to boost efficiency within the company.
Execs have warned how vital it is for the company to remain competitive.
They also tried to give a reassuring message to shoppers.
“The reductions will not impact front-line jobs in our stores, pharmacies, and distribution centers,” said DeAngelis.
