It's been 30 years since the release of Garbage's debut album and the band is still going strong — even if they no longer speak to one another.
Frontwoman Shirley Manson just revealed that the members of the group are "not in each other's lives at all" but still managed to write their eighth studio album, Let All That We Imagine Be the Light, despite their "peculiar dynamic."
The '90s rock band, which features all four original members, keep dysfunction at a minimum by writing music separately and then sending it each other. Manson says that her bandmates, Butch Vig, Steve Marker and Duke Erikson, record their parts and she writes lyrics alone.
“We keep things fresh and have a healthy marriage because we don't speak to each other," she recently told Us Weekly. "The levels of dysfunction are quite astounding at this point. But it seems to work, so why break it?"
Looking back, Manson says the situation used to bother her and for a long time she tried to foster communication between her bandmates before realizing it caused more trouble than it was worth.
"When I was younger, I tried really hard to facilitate communication between band members, and then I just became exhausted by it. I know it sounds really freaky, but as I said, it seems to work," Manson explained.
She continued, "And the fact that we have never gone out of our way to hurt each other, we’ve not ever said anything cruel or disrespectful and we’ve always tried to be kind to one another — I think that’s maybe one of the reasons why it has lasted as long as it has."
In fact, Manson says she actually enjoyed writing the group's new album, sharing that it was like a "surprise gift" every time one of her bandmates sent her a piece of music. She admits she had "no idea what was coming" and was "inspired" by the cinematic music she received.
With over three decades of experience in the music industry, Manson was excited to "explore and push at the boundaries" of her talent and continue to grow as an artist.
"After 30 years of being together, to have a different way of writing and creating was wonderful. I think that's one of the reasons why the record sounds so fresh," Manson shared.
