MARTINEZ — An Oakley woman received a 15-year prison sentence for killing her son in an allegedly deliberate car crash during a trip home from a Mother’s Day celebration.
Latyna Morgan, 45, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years in state prison, court records show. The plea deal was finalized last year but hasn’t been previously reported.
Latyna Morgan was driving her family home from a Mother’s Day 2023 celebration when she veered off Highway 4 and crashed, killing 21-year-old Edward Morgan. Afterwards she admitted to smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol, but the case took an even darker turn when police learned her daughter had filmed a heated argument in the car just before the crash.
“You are drinking and driving,” Edward Morgan allegedly told her. Police say Latyna Morgan responded with an “incoherent rant,” followed by a clearcut threat.
“I’ll drive this b—- off the road,” she allegedly shouted. Less than three seconds later, authorities say she did just that. Three other siblings — two children and an adult — were in the car at the time, police said.
Morgan is currently being housed in the California Institution for Women in Corona, records show.
