For fans of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, everyone knows that one of the most beloved characters on the sitcom was Aunt Hilda, portrayed by Caroline Rhea. So where was Aunt Hilda during the final season of the fan-favorite show?
“That was when I went to do my talk show,” the Phineas and Ferb actress recently disclosed to Us Weekly on the red carpet. Though Hilda appeared on a few episodes of the seventh season, co-star (and co-aunt) Aunt Zelda (Beth Broderick) wasn't in the farewell season whatsoever.
"it was weird," Rhea, 61, admitted. "And sometimes when I watch Season 7, I’m like, ‘Well, this is very weird that we’re not there.’ It’s so messed up because my [whole stand-up routine] is called ‘I Identify as a Witch!’”
Regardless of the aunts' absence during the final season of the beloved sitcom — which ran from 1996 to 2002 — Rhea shared that she still shares a close bond with her Sabrina co-stars, whom she considers family.
"I genuinely think Melissa [Joan Hart]'s my niece. I think Beth is my sister," she gushed, quipping: "I think the cat [Salem] actually talks."
Hart, for her part, addressed the elephant in the room in a 2023 interview with TVLine.
“We’re all really, really close now, but I think there might have been … I don’t wanna say drama, because it wasn’t drama, but I think there might have been some hurt feelings about things that went on in previous seasons," she mused about Broderick's decision to walk away.
“It’s unfortunate that Beth wasn’t in that last episode, but I can tell you that she’s like a big sister to me," the Clarissa Explains It All alum shared, echoing Rhea's comments. "We have wonderful discussions, and we talk often. The cast couldn’t be tighter.”
