One family's love for the band Metallica paid off in a major — and majorly unexpected — way this month.
The McKee family of Virginia had tickets to see the iconic hard rock group's concert at Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium earlier this month. So instead of staying up late to watch TV in their living room as usual, David and Kristin McKee went to bed early the night before to rest up for the big show.
Just a few hours later, disaster struck when a truck crashed into their home, barreling straight into the living room where they would have been relaxing, as the couple explained to WDBJ7 News.
“We heard a loud explosion, glass shatter, and it was just madness from that point on," Kristin said, adding, "We were so fortunate that, that night, my daughter could have walked down that hallway and found us in the rubble. I thank God every day, and Metallica, for saving us.”
The couple's 14-year-old daughter, Madeleine, was so thankful for her parents' safety that she took it upon herself to pen a letter to the band, writing, “You saved my parents’ lives. I will be forever grateful.”
The McKees unfortunately had to miss the Virginia Tech concert, as they were dealing with the aftermath of the crash, which left their home unlivable. The show turned out to be a particularly eventful one: When the band started playing their hit song "Enter Sandman" during the encore, the 60,000 fans in attendance reacted with so much enthusiasm that they triggered a microseismic event clocked by Virginia Tech's Seismological Observatory a mile away.
