Diamondbacks option Jordan Lawlar to Triple-A Reno after tough MLB stretch

The Arizona Diamondbacks have optioned top prospect Jordan Lawlar after a tumultuous stretch since the club called him up on May 12, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

Additionally, the team called up infielder Ildemaro Vargas, who opted out of his minor league deal with the team before inking a major league contract on Wednesday.

Lawlar did not come up to the majors with an everyday role given the depth of Arizona’s infield.

The 22-year-old started six of 15 games and never found comfort at the plate, finishing this cup of coffee 0-for-19 with nine strikeouts and three walks. Fourteen of the right-handed hitter’s 22 plate appearances came against righties.

Diamondbacks hit a new point of frustration with blowout loss to Pirates, Paul Skenes

Defensively, he showed his versatility with starts at second base, shortstop and third base.

Lawlar made some highlight plays, such as this diving snag on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He also had his down moments, notably committing two errors on Wednesday before getting optioned.

“I don’t want to take anything away from the month he had in Reno,” manager Torey Lovullo said postgame on Wednesday. “He was a phenomenal player. He deserved that opportunity to get called up, but we’ve got some decisions to make.”

Lawlar is the top-ranked prospect in the system and No. 4 in the game, per MLB Pipeline. He dominated the month of April for the Aces, winning Pacific Coast League Player of the Month.

In Triple-A this season, he has hit .336 with a .992 OPS, six home runs and 13 steals from the right side.

Major league pitchers laid into him with breaking balls, and he struggled to do anything with them.

This was Lawlar’s second MLB stint, as he made his debut in September 2023. He did not hit well then either, as he went 4-for-31 at the plate at 21 years old in a pennant chase.

“When you ask me the question, ‘Why isn’t he here? Why isn’t he here? Why isn’t he here? There’s a very specific criteria that we follow and we believe in,” Lovullo said. “When you get here, we want you to be able to do X, Y and Z. Sometimes we get a little ahead of ourselves.”
