The Chinese government on Thursday fired back at the the Trump administration's decision to revoke Chinese student visas, calling the move unjustified and damaging to the reputation of the U.S. abroad.
“The US decision to revoke Chinese student visas is fully unjustified,” Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian said in a statement on the social media platform X.
“Citing ideology and national security as a pretext, the move seriously hurts the lawful rights and interests of international students from China and disrupts people-to-people exchanges between the two countries,” Lin continued.
Lin said China has appealed to the U.S. over the decision.
“China firmly opposes this action and has protested to the US over the decision,” Lin said.
“This politically motivated and discriminatory move exposes the hypocrisy behind the US’s claims of freedom and openness. It will further damage the image and reputation of the US itself,” he added.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday announced the U.S. will start “aggressively revoke visas” from Chinese students, including from “those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.”
The State Department will work with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to revoke the visas and will “revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong,” Rubio added in a statement.
The announcement comes a day after the Trump administration directed U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide to pause scheduling visa interviews for international students as it mulls expanding “social media screening and vetting” for applicants.
The State Department on Tuesday issued an internal cable, signed by Rubio, stating that “effective immediately, in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and vetting, consular sections should not add any additional student or exchange visitor (F, M, and J) visa appointment capacity until further guidance is issued [separate telegram], which we anticipate in the coming days,” multiple outlets reported.
Earlier this year, the administration revoked the visas of thousands of international students.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement later restored more than 1,500 foreign student visa registrations in its reporting system.
