Mars Inc. has officially removed the controversial additive titanium dioxide from its Skittles lineup.
The company confirmed that it nixed the ingredient, which is used to whiten food and/or brighten colors—and can also make candy appear shiny—from its formulas before the end of 2024, according to a new report from Bloomberg News.
The move follows the 2022 total ban in the European Union due to concerns that nanoparticles of titanium dioxide could accumulate within the body and cause damage to a person's DNA. While the ingredient has also faced criticism as a “potential concern” underneath Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s Department of Health and Human Services, it has not been formally banned in the country. A 2023 effort from the Environmental Working Group and the Center for Food Safety to revoke its approval as a color additive has also failed to prove successful thus far, with the FDA website showing it was still under review as of March 2024, according to the publication.
Skittles' parent company—which also produces treats like M&M's, Snickers, Twix, and Mars bars—initially pledged to remove titanium dioxide back in 2016, and is currently still using synthetic dyes like Red 40, Yellow 5 and Blue 1—color additives that the FDA and HHS said last month they would be working to have eliminated from the food supply by the end of next year.
Consumers may still find products containing titanium dioxide until those still containing it are sold out. It's unclear how the removal of titanium dioxide will affect the candy's appearance or taste, nor if it has been replaced with another ingredient.
