Rockies sign veteran infielder Orlando Arcia to major league deal

Seeking veteran depth in its infield and a boost to its anemic offense, the Rockies signed shortstop Orlando Arcia to a major league deal on Wednesday.

In a corresponding move, the club optioned infielder Aaron Schunk to Triple-A Albuquerque.

“We are trying to get better,” general manager Bill Schmidt said. “Arcia gives us some versatility and he’ll be our utility infielder.”

Arcia is available for Colorado’s game against the Cubs on Wednesday night in Chicago.

Though Arcia is primarily a shortstop — and will play behind Ezequiel Tovar — Schmidt said Arcia can also play second and third.

“On the days when we want to give our starters a break, Arcia can fill right in,” Schmidt said.

The Rockies entered Wednesday’s game with a 9-46 record, the worst start to a season in baseball’s modern era (since 1901). Their .219 team batting average is the lowest in the majors and their .642 OPS is the third-lowest.

Arcia has a $2 million salary and is still owed around $1.4 million for the remainder of the season. However, the Rockies only owe the prorated major league minimum portion of what remains of his salary, with Atlanta paying the bulk of his salary.

The Rockies are also hoping to get a boost from the return of Thairo Estrada, who was signed as a free agent to be the starting second baseman. Estrada is scheduled to join the Rockies in New York on Friday for the opener of a three-game series against the Mets. Estrada has missed the entire season with a fractured right wrist after being hit by a pitch in spring training by the Rangers’  Kumar Rocker.

Arcia, 30, was Atlanta’s opening day starter at shortstop but was released on Sunday. He was designated for assignment Friday to create room for Ronald Acuña Jr. on the Braves’ active roster.

Arcia was an All-Star with the Braves in 2023 when he hit .264 with 17 home runs and 25 doubles. But Arcia hit just .194 with a .445 OPS in 14 games this season. He was Atlanta’s primary shortstop in each of the past two years, but Nick Allen beat him out for the job early this season.

Arcia has a .241/.294/.373 career slash line with the Brewers and Braves in his 10-year big-league career.
