Elemis Pro-Collagen Skin Protection Fluid SPF 50
Jack StrongSmall but mighty, this Elemis cream is well worth your time[/caption]Elemis Pro-Collagen Skin Protection Fluid SPF 50, £55
BUY HEREPros: Great level of hydration, you don’t need much, leaves skin feeling smoother
Cons: Expensive, small size, clay-like smell
Rating: 4/5
The Elemis Pro-Collagen Skin Protection Fluid SPF 50 moisturiser is not typically classed as a ‘men’s product’, but it seems to work wonders for many skin types.
It has a silky texture that rubs into my skin very easily, leaving it feeling smoother in (almost) an instant.
On top of that, I found the hydration power to be really impressive, meaning my skin felt nourished for hours after application.
This is especially handy if, like me, your skin tends to dry out quickly.
I wasn’t awfully keen on the clay-like smell that it left behind, but it only lasted for a few minutes, and usually that’s a sign of having no added fragrance nasties.
Overall, I loved the way this moisturiser made my skin look and feel, but I did feel like it was still a bit too pricey when you factor in the 40ml size of the bottle.
If this moisturiser were more affordable, I’d honestly consider making it a year-round purchase, but for now, I’ll just stick to the basics.
Bulldog Anytime Daily Moisturiser SPF 30
Jack StrongThis Bulldog moisturiser comes with an SPF 50 rating[/caption]Bulldog Anytime Daily UV Moisturiser SPF 50, £18
BUY HEREPros: Affordable, provides good hydration, added vitamin C, non-greasy, smells great
Cons: Difficult to rub in, leaves a white cast at first, a little heavy
Rating: 3.5/5
Next up on the list was the Anytime Daily Moisturiser from popular men’s grooming brand Bulldog.
Sporting an SPF rating of 50, this moisturiser is designed to be applied whenever it’s needed throughout the day.
The first thing I noticed upon application was the great smell that is subtle and masculine.
I’m usually not keen on added scents because it usually means the product has unnecessary added allergens, but I can honestly say I didn’t feel any discomfort here.
In terms of application, I did find this one took quite some time to rub in, and it was a little bit heavier on my fingertips.
It even felt like this when I was using way smaller quantities, so I know it wasn’t because I was using too much by accident.
Once I had spent some time rubbing it in, I noticed a subtle white cast left on my face, but I was relieved to see it had faded somewhat by the next time I looked in the mirror.
In terms of hydration, this cream kept my skin feeling hydrated and soft for several hours, so it certainly seemed to do the trick.
Overall, for its humble price point, the Bulldog Anytime Daily Moisturiser is certainly a good product, and it offers a hassle-free approach to SPF that some men might prefer.
L’Oréal Men Expert Oil-Control Moisturiser SPF 30
Jack StrongThis men’s moisturiser comes with excellent oil-control[/caption]L’Oréal Men Expert Oil-Control Moisturiser SPF 30, £13.99
BUY HEREPros: Easy to apply and absorb, affordable, reduces oil, good for sensitive skin
Cons: Smell isn’t amazing
Rating: 4.5/5
With a line solely focused on men’s skin, L’Oréal Men Expert’s Oil-Control Moisturiser is a great starting point for any guys looking to switch to an SPF moisturiser.
Priced at just £13.99, this affordable cream allows for daily application without breaking the bank.
Formulated with SPF 30 and 2% Niacinamide, this cream not only protects from the sun, but it also helps prevent any premature signs of skin ageing.
If, like me, you have oily and blemish-prone skin, this product works great to rebalance problem areas, improving the overall appearance of your skin in just a few days.
In terms of application, I found this cream absorbed into my skin very easily, and it didn’t leave a white cast on my face afterwards.
The result was my skin felt hydrated, soft and supple, and as someone prone to sensitive flare-ups, I didn’t experience any of that with this particular product.
The only downside is that the smell can be a little bit sharp when you first apply it, but if you can get past that, you have a great product on your hands.
Evolve Organic Beauty Climate Defence SPF 30
Jack StrongThis cream has great UVA and UVB protection[/caption]Evolve Organic Beauty Climate Defence SPF 30, £29
BUY HEREPros: Organic ingredients, broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, environmentally friendly
Cons: Leaves a white cast, difficult to rub in, much more suited as a sun cream rather than a daily wear
Rating: 3/5
With a mission to create environmentally friendly and science-backed skincare, Evolve Organic Beauty offers a range of unisex products.
As part of my SPF journey, I tried their Climate Defence SPF 30, but it left a lot to be desired.
Although I wanted to love this product purely because of the company’s great ethics and ethos, I found this particular cream a little too difficult to work with.
The cream itself is very thick, and I thought it was a chore to apply and rub in.
Once applied, it left a very noticeable white cast on my face.
A few hours after its application, my partner asked if I had used a new product as she could clearly see the pale, ghost-like tint it had left behind.
That said, it does boast great UVA and UVB protection, so if you live in or frequently visit warmer climates, I could see this being very useful.
Personally, I would probably feel much more comfortable using this moisturiser as a sun cream rather than as a daily moisturiser.
It’s probably far less likely to irritate the skin and clog pores compared to your run-of-the-mill sun cream, so I may save this one for my next trip away.
No7 Future Renew Day Cream SPF40 50ml
Jack StrongNo7 products are great for skin hydration[/caption]No7 Future Renew Day Cream SPF40 50ml, £37.95
BUY HEREPros: Offers excellent levels of hydration, nice neutral smell, no white glare
Cons: Slightly greasy, easy to apply too much, might not suit those prone to breakouts, expensive
Rating: 3.5/5
After trying the No7 Future Renew Day Cream SPF 40, I have mixed thoughts.
Out of all the moisturisers I’ve tried so far, this one is arguably the thickest, and upon the first few uses, it was easy to get a bit carried away with how much you actually need to use.
Luckily, when I used the correct amount for my skin, the cream absorbed into my skin quickly.
The cream has a pleasant neutral smell, which is perfect for anyone with sensitive skin or a dislike of skincare with a strong fragrance.
My skin felt soft and hydrated for some hours after using it, all without the dreaded white glare.
It was quite greasy to the touch, which I was worried might clog pores and cause breakouts, but I didn’t have many issues with this.
Over several days of use, this cream left my skin feeling supple and fresh, but I must admit I’ve experienced similar effects from any cheaper products than this £37.95 one.
Ultrasun Sports SPF 50 spray and gel
Zoe NicolUltrasun’s products are perfume-free[/caption]Ultrasun SPF 50 Sports Spray 150ml at Boots, £22.40
BUY NOWPros: Light, transparent, perfume-free, waterproof, specially formulated for sport
Cons: Not travel-sized, gel has baby oil consistency
Rating: 4/5
An SPF solely aimed at sporty people is something we like to see at talkSPORT, especially as Ultrasun offers the choice of an SPF spray and an SPF gel option.
Both are endorsed by Ironman champion Patrick Lange, whose face features on the front of the packaging.
If you know anything about triathlons, this might impress you, but to me it felt a bit random.
The bottle design was equally random; instead of a tube of product that can be squeezed or pumped out, the top unscrews to reveal a small hole from which liquid comes out (like a baby oil bottle).
I’ve never actually used SPF that has the consistency of oil before, but I found that it sank into the skin almost immediately upon contact.
There’s no smell or stickiness or white casting as this gel is completely odourless and transparent.
I also thought that it left my skin well-moisturised, which was a bonus as I have found SPF to be quite drying in the past.
The sports spray was exceptionally useful for hard-to-reach areas such as the back and shoulders.
A little goes a long way, so although one bottle only contains 150ml as opposed to 200ml for the gel, you only need four spritzes to cover the whole of the back.
Once applied, it’s water-resistant, which I was very grateful for when it started raining as I was running.
Stinging eyes from suncream dripping down the face due to sweat or rain is a horrible feeling, and there was none of that with Ultrasun Sport.
I preferred using the spray on my face because I already use a separate moisturiser, and having the Ultrasun sports gel and moisturiser on my face made it feel a little too greasy.
If you have normal to dry skin and want an odourless SPF that sinks in fast and doesn’t sting when you get it wet, Ultrasun Sport is a great buy.

Rock Face SPF 20 Moisturiser
Jack StrongAt £7.50, this Rock Face moisturiser is an absolute steal[/caption]Rock Face SPF 20 Moisturiser, £7.50
BUY HEREPros: Very affordable, non-greasy, vegan, great citrus scent
Cons: Quite heavy, annoying bottle, low SPF rating
Rating: 4/5
With British origins and vegan credentials, Rock Face SPF 20 Moisturiser delivers affordable yet scientifically backed products.
Upon opening the lid, the first thing that strikes you about this moisturiser is its distinctive citrus scent.
Fresh and just the right amount of pungent, this cream smells absolutely fantastic.
As previously mentioned, I’m not exactly someone who’s keen on added scents due to the sensitivity of my skin, but this one didn’t give me any issues during its brief trial.
This moisturiser does feel quite heavy between your fingertips; however, I’m glad to say that it absorbs relatively easily once applied.
After each application of this cream, my face felt fresh and hydrated for a good amount of time, with the odd top-up required here and there throughout the day.
There are many positives to highlight here, but two minor drawbacks stand out: the SPF rating and the bottle design.
With only an SPF 20 rating, this cream won’t be suitable for all climates or skin types.
If you have particularly sun-sensitive skin, I would steer clear.
The other issue is simply the shape of the bottle, as it can be frustrating to dispense the product when it’s running low.
All things considered, this is a fantastic moisturiser with a budget-friendly price tag.
P20 Urban Shield Face SPF50+
Jack StrongThis P20 cream offers protection for up to 10 hours[/caption]P20 Urban Shield Face SPF50+ , £29
BUY HEREPros: Lightweight, non-greasy, very high protection for up to ten hours, water-resistant
Cons: Not the best smell, slightly expensive
Rating: 4.5/5
Next up on the agenda was P20’s Urban Shield Face SPF50+.
Along with having an SPF rating of 50+ , this cream also boasts up to 10 hours of sun protection, water resistance and anti-pollution protection, making it a solid all-rounder for fast-paced city life.
The cream feels quite lightweight and rubs in extremely easily, leaving a non-greasy finish with a non-comedogenic (or pore-clogging) finish.
Truth be told, the smell isn’t the greatest.
But, you can likely attribute that to the fact that it’s been made completely fragrance free and has been dermalogically tested to reduce the chance of any allergies or sensitive skin flare ups.
As someone who suffers with sensitive skin, I’d much rather have to put up with a slightly bad smell instead of flare ups, so this one gets a major thumbs up in my eyes.
At £29, it’s not exactly the cheapest, however, I would certainly find myself purchasing this product again in the future.
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30
Jack StrongThis Kiehl’s cream rubs in effortlessly[/caption]Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30, £37
BUY HEREPros: Rubs in effortlessly, only need a small amount
Cons: Expensive
Rating: 4.5/5
As the SPF version of Kiehl’s #1 customer favourite, the Ultra Facial Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30 had some big boots to fill.
Priced at £37 for 50ml, this cream isn’t exactly the cheapest, but given just how many people use it, I was eager to see what the fuss was about.
Upon opening its compact tub, you’re greeted with what looks to be a very thick cream, so I had my apprehensions about how quickly it would rub in.
Much to my surprise, this moisturiser rubbed in almost effortlessly, and I had to use much less than originally anticipated to get the coverage I needed.
For hours my skin felt plump and refreshed, and I could easily see just why so many people opt to spend the extra and use Kiehl’s as a brand.
I did experience some minor discomfort in my eyes, but that was only after a sweaty gym workout, so I can likely attribute that to the fact I applied it too close to the session.
Overall, Kiehl’s gets top marks, and I’ll undoubtedly use it again.
La Roche Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 SPF50+ Face & Body Hydrating Milk
Maxim HancockThis product is great for those with sensitive skin[/caption]La Roche Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 SPF50+ Face & Body Hydrating Milk, £19.20
BUY HEREPros: Well suited to sensitive skin, waterproof, lightweight and invisible
Cons: Requires frequent reapplication
Rating: 4.5/5
La Roche Posay’s Anthelios UVMune 400 Suncream is one of my favourite sun creams I’ve ever tried.
It’s nice and lightweight, easy to apply, and is low impact on the skin.
While some sun creams leave me breaking out the day after, I never found this to be the case here.
It apparently doubles as a solid makeup base, but I can’t speak to this personally.
This cream also works perfectly well for your body, which I used it for when I didn’t have another cream on hand. It’s super handy when you’re on the go.
I’d recommend picking this La Roche Posay sun cream for a straightforward solution for keeping your skin properly protected this summer without any nasty side effects.

Ocean Freedom Surf Clay Clear SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen
Maxim HancockSurf Clay products are very water-resistant[/caption]Ocean Freedom Surf Clay Clear SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen, £17.19
BUY HEREPros: Highly water resistant, feels super protective, reef safe, not tested on animals, do not need to reapply often
Cons: Very thick, hard to apply, clogging
Rating: 3/5
This sea-ready SPF from Ocean Freedom is ideal for staying protected when in the water or playing sports.
Perfect for surfers and swimmers, this UVA and UVB protective clay clings to your skin and won’t be washed off the minute you get in the water.
Thanks to the natural formula, you can rest easy knowing this sun cream isn’t leaving any harmful nasties in the sea that might damage sea life – hence its ‘reefsafe’ label.
Being clay-based, the cream is tough to unintentionally wash off, so you won’t be reaching for the tub every hour like you might with a more standard cream.
But it’s also quite tricky to put on since it’s super thick and heavy, and I did find it sometimes left visible streaks on my skin.
This said, you will find this cream lasts a long time,
Overall, if you’re looking for an ultra-protective SPF solution that won’t wash off the second you go for a dip, this Surf Clay is a great option (so long as you’re happy to put in some elbow grease applying the stuff).

Grown Alchemist Natural Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 (50mL)
Maxim Hancock This Grown Alchemist offering gives plenty of UVA and UVB protection[/caption]Grown Alchemist Natural Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 (50mL), £35
BUY HEREPros: Contains lots of antioxidants, vegan and reef-safe, broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection
Cons: Feels a bit greasy, on the pricier side, only SPF 30
Rating: 3.5/5
Grown Alchemist’s Natural Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen is trying to get a lot done.
It’s a mineral-based cream that offers skin nourishment and UV protection.
Enriched with hyaluronic acid, rosehip oil and parsley seed extract, it is suited for those looking for a one-stop solution to nourish and protect the skin.
This said, I did find the cream was slightly heavy and didn’t apply as easily as some others.
Additionally, I wasn’t a big fan of the greasy sheen it leaves on your face, it almost felt sticky.
I have quite sensitive skin, and I did break out when I used this product.
This cream only offers SPF30 protection, so it’s a bit lacklustre when the sun’s out.
Overall, this hydrating sun cream definitely has potential, offering skin nourishment and UV protection, but it is not ideal for those looking for something lightweight.

FAQs
How often should you apply an SPF moisturiser?
An SPF moisturiser should be applied first thing in the morning on clean skin, and then whenever your skin feels dry and in need of hydration afterwards.
However, if you are spending most of your day in the sun, you should consider applying your SPF moisturiser every two hours for maximum levels of protection.
If you’re prone to sweating or you go swimming, it’s also best to reapply the moisturiser (when needed) to a clean and dry face.
What time of day to apply an SPF moisturiser?
The best time for your initial application of an SPF moisturiser should be first thing in the morning, after you’ve showered or washed your face.
This way your skin can rehydrate from your shower and your sleep, and you’ll be set for the day ahead.
As mentioned above, be sure to reapply your SPF moisturiser every two hours if you’re in the sun, or if you’ve perspired a lot or been swimming.
Do you still need to use facial sunscreen in addition to an SPF moisturiser?
If you’re in a particularly hot climate, you will likely need to apply sun cream on top of your SPF moisturiser.
While SPF moisturisers offer some protection against UVB and UVA, sun creams will offer a lot more protection, meaning you can avoid sun damage when in high UV areas.
Just make sure to apply your SPF moisturiser as usual before applying any additional sun cream.
