The Arizona Diamondbacks designated reliever Joe Mantiply for assignment on Friday, the team announced.
Mantiply is coming off one of his worst stretches as a pro, posting a 15.83 ERA and 3.00 WHIP across 10 games played (9.2 innings pitched) in 2025. He gave up 17 earned runs, five home runs and three walks during that span.
In his last game with the club against the San Francisco Giants on May 13, Mantiply allowed three earned runs and a walk in just an inning of work. He struck out one.
It’s been a mighty downturn in production for Mantiply since his All-Star season in 2022, where he sported a 2.85 ERA and 1.083 WHIP in 69 games played (60 innings pitched) while striking out 61 and walking six.

Additionally, the team officially optioned top prospect Jordan Lawlar and reliever Kevin Ginkel to Triple-A Reno. Arizona also selected the contract of reliever Jeff Brigham from Reno and signed infielder Ildemaro Vargas to a major league contract.

Lawlar started six of 15 games and never found comfort at the plate, finishing this cup of coffee 0-for-19 with nine strikeouts and three walks. Fourteen of the right-handed hitter’s 22 plate appearances came against righties.
Defensively, he showed his versatility with starts at second base, shortstop and third base.
Lawlar made some highlight plays, such as this diving snag on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He also had his down moments, notably committing two errors on Wednesday before getting optioned.
Ginkel heads to the minors after posting a 12.60 ERA and 2.10 WHIP in 13 games played (10 innings pitched). He struck out 15 and walked seven during that span.
Brigham spent 2023 with the New York Mets and pitched for the Miami Marlins from 2018-22.
With Triple-A Reno this season, he’s posted a 5.23 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and struck out 32 batters to nine walks over 20.2 innings.
Vargas joins the major league roster after recently opting out of his minor league deal.
He slashed .246/.295/.316 with a .611 OPS in 95 games for the Washington Nationals last year.
