A fifth grade student from Greeley’s artwork “shines a light” on the thousands of children who go missing every year across the nation.
Perpetua Adams from St. Mary Catholic School in Greeley won first place in the state’s annual Missing Children’s Day poster contest, according to a Colorado Bureau of Investigation news release.
Since 2014, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the United States Department of Justice have held the poster contest, designed to start discussions and increase safety awareness among young students in the state, the release. The contest also aims to recognize those who work to find missing children, like law enforcement agencies.
The contest instructed fifth grade contestants to draw a poster aligning with the theme “Bringing Our Missing Children Home,” according to the release. Adams crafted a black and white poster of a girl crying on her knees and looking toward a light, the only object in color.
“This year’s artwork shows the talent of our youth in Colorado and how thoughtful images can shine a light on a community issue that affects far too many,” Interim CBI Director Rebecca Spiess said.

As a state winner, Adams’ artwork moved on to the National Missing Children’s Day poster competition in Washington, D.C. Although she did not win at the national level, those involved in the contest celebrated the young girl’s artistic depiction of what the theme meant to her.
In Colorado, Irie Boettcher of Kremmling won second place in this year’s contest, and Vicky Molina from Trinidad won third place. Colorado Bureau of Investigation agents awarded the three winners with certificates at their schools.
The annual poster contest coincides with National Missing Children’s Day, typically held on May 25, the release said.
