Sam Leavitt understands how he and ASU will be viewed with higher expectations

Both the Sun Devils and quarterback Sam Leavitt are dealing with higher expectations going into 2025, with ASU expected to build on their surprise performance from last season. Quarterback Sam Leavitt is dealing with those very same motivations as some would consider him a sleeper Heisman candidate going into the season.

Leavitt, during his appearance on The Matt Barrie Show, discussed the higher expectations for both himself and the program going into this year.

“It’s what I have believed in myself from day one, just other people are waking up to it now,” Leavitt said. “I finally proved it on some scale, so you know, it doesn’t change how I view myself but it definitely makes me understand how other people are going to view me.”

Leavitt, who last season threw for 2,885 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions, is hoping to build on his momentum going into this year.

Both he and Arizona State came out of nowhere last season with little expectation to win the Big 12, even in their own locker room.

“We weren’t talking about winning the Big 12 from day one,” Leavitt said. “It wasn’t a major belief from the very beginning, but as the season went on, people saw what we could do. We never mentioned it. Dilly (head coach Kenny Dillingham) would never say, ‘Hey we’re going to win the Big 12,’ or this is our goal. That’s not what he does. He just says, ‘How are we going to be today, or how are we going to push each other?'”

The third-year sophomore will be under more pressure to succeed with the departure of star running back Cam Skattebo to the NFL.

ASU finished the 2024 season 11-3, with a 7-2 conference record in the Big 12, culminating in a conference championship and a postseason bye. It defeated Iowa State in the Big 12 title game, 45-19. The Sun Devils would eventually go on to lose 39-31 in overtime to Texas in what turned out to be a classic in the second round of the newly-added 12-team playoff.

“I’m still not over the loss,” Leavitt said. “There were so many plays that could have been made out there, and there are always going to be plays you should have made in the game. We were just so close so many times that there should have been one of those things that went right and changed the entire game. It just gives me all the more belief this year that it’s plenty possible to go above and beyond what we did last year.”

The Sun Devils have 16 returning starters going into the 2025 season, some of the most in the country. But the quarterback said to Barrie that he doesn’t believe in talking about previous seasons and expectations for the upcoming season.

“The biggest thing is locking in every single day,” he said.
