The transition Joshua Shanklin is about to undertake as a junior college standout making the jump to Power 4 football isn’t an easy one, but he’s well-positioned to make it count.
Shanklin, who committed to ASU earlier this month, was viewed as the top edge rusher to come out of the junior college ranks, per 247 Sports. His production of 14.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, four fumbles forced and six passes defensed speaks for itself.
“Really just taking what I’ve learned from junior college to applying the other coaching that I’m going to get from Arizona State,” Shanklin told the State of the Sun Devils Podcast. “Just keep staying hungry, like I know some players, when they get to a certain level, they get comfortable.

“But me … I feel like I worked my butt off just to get here, so really just taking advantage of just everything that’s coming to me right now.”
The 6-foot-4, 280-pound EDGE detailed how he spent much of his high school career playing receiver, but his time at one school was derailed by COVID-19. A transfer ahead of his senior season set him up for the move to defense, and he posted double-digit sacks.
He circled a motto head coach Kenny Dillingham has often used in Tempe: “Have more fun working harder than anyone in the country.” That’s why committing to ASU just felt right.
“I really just liked how the coaching staff was just talking about how their culture is strong,” Shanklin said. “And really just seeing that it’s just like that, they know what they’re talking about and the culture was just great.
“This area is nice. Like, I feel like Arizona State was probably the best fit for me as far as coaching staff, culture-wise and education, stuff like that.”
