Slapped – Chelsea and Nottingham Forest players brawled when manager was wiped out in Champions League race

Nottingham Forest and Chelsea go toe-to-toe on Sunday with a place in the Champions League on the line.

A whole season comes down to just 90 minutes at the City Ground and could have a major say on how each teams’ summer looks.

Chelsea are clinging on to that fifth position, which this season will get a berth in the premier European competition.

However, Forest and Aston Villa are breathing down their necks. In fact, just three points separate Man City in third right down to Forest in seventh place.

All eyes will be on the action in Nottingham as Nuno Espirito Santo and Enzo Maresca will their sides to end the season on a high.

Expect fireworks… and if their clash at Stamford Bridge was anything to go by then everyone is in for a treat.

A huge brawl broke out between both sets of players back in October as the two teams played out a 1-1 draw in west London.

It all started when Forest’s Neco Williams pushed Marc Cucurella into Blues boss Enzo Maresca.

A mass brawl ensued with pretty much every player on the pitch involved, except Cole Palmer who decided to sit down, and plenty of those off the field also joined in.

Maresca and Nuno tried to play peacemaker, but that wasn’t the end of it.

Shocking footage showed Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson slap Forest defender Morato.

Jackson had already been substituted by this point, but somehow escaped further punishment.

VAR did look at the incident but deemed no further action was taken, with questions then arising over potential retrospective punishment.

However, he escaped any form of punishment for the incident.

Blues boss Maresca did not have any issue with what he saw on the field too.

“If you ask me if I prefer when something like that happens – I like the spirit of our team,” Maresca said after the game.

“In terms of emotion, the team is fighting altogether and I don’t think some of them lose their heads. They were, all of them, in the game. I was happy with that.

“For sure, there are things that we can control and do better, and probably this is one of the things. But the way they are fighting together, the way they are doing things together, I’m very happy.”

Just a point separates Chelsea and Nottingham Forest

There will be no Jackson in the replay of that match at the City Ground, however, as he was sent off against Newcastle earlier this month.

That means he is serving a three-game suspension, with the Forest clash the second of that ban.

Even if they lose this match, Nottingham Forest are guaranteed their highest Premier League finish since 1994-95, when they came 3rd.

Should results go their way on the final day, they could potentially reach the European Cup for the first time since the 1980-81 campaign, when they did so as reigning European champions.
