Measles case went through DIA and nearby hotel, another case through a Pueblo hotel

Coloradans’ potential exposure to measles grew rapidly in recent days with a confirmed traveler’s case coming through Denver International Airport and a nearby hotel, as well as a different case with an out-of-state driver staying at a hotel in Pueblo hotel, state officials said.

The flyer arrived at an international gate on Concourse A on May 13, walked to the international customs area near the bridge, through the international baggage claim and then rode a shuttle to the Quality Inn and Suites on Tower Road. The traveler returned to the airport for a domestic flight on May 14.

State health officials are asking anyone who thinks they may have come in contact with the traveler with measles, which is highly contagious, to stay away from groups and monitor any potential symptoms for the 21 day incubation period.

“Anyone who was exposed to the case on either of the flights will be notified directly by their state or local public health agency,” the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said.

“This situation underscores the critical importance of vaccination. Staying up to date on vaccinations and being aware of health risks when traveling are important ways to protect yourself and your community,” said Dr. Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist and deputy chief medical officer at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. “Measles is highly contagious, and we are working swiftly to identify and notify anyone who may have been exposed. Vaccination remains the most effective protection against this preventable disease.”

The state also warned this week of potential measles exposure from an out-of-state driver who stayed at the Holiday Inn Express at 4530 Dillon Drive in Pueblo the the night of May 9, checking out the next day. “CDPHE was made aware of the case after the individual tested positive in their home state and the case investigation revealed the hotel stay in Colorado,” a state release said.

State officials included the graphic above as a guide to DIA and hotel travelers who want to review whether they were exposed to the Denver case.

State health officials gave the same advice to anyone who might have been in that area, monitoring potential symptoms for up to 21 days and avoiding gatherings. “Monitoring for symptoms is especially critical for people who have not been vaccinated with the MMR vaccine because they are at significantly higher risk,” the state said. “People who are susceptible to measles and were exposed at this location may develop symptoms through Wednesday, June 4.”

Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that usually starts several days later on the face and spreads, the state release said. People suspecting such symptoms should call ahead to their regular provider or urgent care in order to give them time to prepare for handling measles, the state said.
