Maple Leafs part ways with team president Brendan Shanahan

The ‘Shanaplan’ did not lead to a Stanley Cup for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Team president Brendan Shanahan’s contract will not be renewed, the Maple Leafs announced on Thursday.

The move comes after the Leafs suffered a 6-1 loss to the visiting Florida Panthers in Game 7 of a second-round playoff series on Sunday. The Leafs also lost 6-1 in Game 5 at Scotiabank Arena, and the team was booed by Toronto fans in both games.

In a statement, MLSE president Keith Pelley thanked Shanahan for his time as president, which began when he was hired in 2014.

Toronto made the playoffs nine straight seasons under Shanahan, but failed to advance past the second round.

“Our responsibility and driving motivation, however, is to add a new chapter to the Maple Leafs’ championship history, and it was determined that a new voice was required to take the team to the next level in the years ahead. The franchise will be forever grateful for Brendan’s contributions and wish him and his family every success and happiness in the future,” Pelley said.

Shanahan also thanked fans, players, alumni and fellow management in a separate statement.

“While I am proud of the rebuild we embarked on starting in 2014, ultimately, I came here to help win the Stanley Cup, and we did not. There is nothing more I wanted to deliver to our fans, and my biggest regret is that we could not finish the job,” Shanahan said.

The Leafs granted permission for the New York Islanders to speak to Shanahan about a role with the club on Wednesday, raising speculation that his decade-plus association with the club could end.

The Toronto-born Shanahan joined the team after he spent time as an executive in the NHL’s head office following a Hall of Fame playing career.

Shanahan took over a team that made the playoffs just once in the previous 10 years, and guided the Leafs back to competitive relevance. But the Leafs couldn’t make a deep playoff run on his watch, as a core of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares suffered repeated post-season setbacks.

The Leafs have had five head coaches (Randy Carlyle, Peter Horachek (interim), Mike Babcock, Sheldon Keefe and current bench boss Craig Berube) and four general managers (Dave Nonis, Lou Lamoriello, Kyle Dubas and current GM Brad Treliving) under Shanahan.

Shanahan made a bold move to cut ties with Dubas after the 2023 season before eventually hiring Treliving, the former Calgary Flames GM.

Dubas went on to land the GM job with the Pittsburgh Penguins that same summer.

Treliving’s moves helped the Leafs make their longest playoff run in this nine-year stretch, but the team still fell well short of winning its first Stanley Cup since 1967.
