Looking About in Mendocino County: Remembering those who have served

“How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!” – Maya Angelou

“The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” – Thomas Jefferson

    In memory

Freedom is a beautiful thing, but it sometimes comes at a terrible price. While we cannot bring back those who lost in the fight for freedom, we can remember them and the sacrifices they made during their lives.

Traditionally Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May.

May we never forget: “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.” – President Harry S. Truman.

Teach your children that freedom is not free, but costs many everything they had.

Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 1900, and American Legion Lewis White Post 78, are again sponsoring a Memorial Day Ceremony, Monday, May 26, at noon at the Russian River Cemetery, 940 Low Gap Road, Ukiah.

The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces. Call Veterans Services (707) 463-4226 for more information

“They put on the uniform. They answered the call, knowing the risks. They stood alongside their brothers and sisters in arms. They made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Beyond all that’s lost, let us remember all they gave,” from the Posts.

    Local gals run London Marathon

On April 27, two hometown girls, Kristy Hahn (formerly Getts) and Mariah Talso, took on the 45th TCS London Marathon, earning their second Gold Stars. In addition, they both became part of history (and the Guinness Book of World Records!) as the marathon took the title for the largest number of finishers in a marathon, with 56,640 people crossing the finish line.

In addition, the 2025 London Marathon set a new world record for the biggest annual one-day fundraising event ever with almost $100 million raised for charities. Mariah ran the marathon for Tusk; anyone interested in donating can do so here: ( tusk.org/donating-in-the-usa). She chose to run for Tusk, as the mission speaks to her heart, as it supports wildlife conservation and education throughout Africa.

Mariah described her experience: “While the London Marathon was my slowest marathon timewise, it was the absolute best experience running a race I’ve ever had. The weather was gorgeous, and the crowds were amazing. The entire course was packed with wall-to-wall spectators who were cheering the entire way. I couldn’t help but smile and feel so grateful for the opportunity to run London. I had a permanent smile all 26.2 miles of the race.

“While I know this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, running across Tower Bridge, in front of Big Ben, and Buckingham Palace, all to the tune of spectators cheering me on, lead to quite a few tears being shed and moments that will be forever engrained in my heart.

“Kristy and I have been best friends since we were at Calpella Elementary School and now, just a few years later, we are off chasing gold stars, making our own dreams come true, and hopefully, showing our children that we are strong and can accomplish anything we set our minds to (hopefully inspiring them to do the same).

“We’ve got our eyes set on New York, Chicago, Boston, Sydney, and Tokyo, which one will be next?”

Cheer-i-o… and “Thank You” to all who have served our country.
