Joe Root creates World Record; beats even Sachin Tendulkar

England star Joe Root, on Thursday (May 22), scripted history as he became the first-ever England player to score 13,000 Test runs. The right-handed batsman achieved the feat on day one of the ongoing four-day Test between England and Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

Joe Root needed 28 runs to reach the landmark and achieved the feat by taking a single off the first delivery of the 80th over bowled by Victor Nyauchi. The former England captain became not only the first England player to achieve the feat but also the quickest to reach 13000 Test runs in terms of matches.

The record was previously held by South Africa legend Jacques Kallis who reached 13000 Test runs in his 159th Test. On the other hand, Root achieved the milestone in his 153rd Test. However, the 34-year-old is also the slowest batter to achieve the feat in terms of innings.

    Joe Root - 153 Jacques Kallis - 159 Rahul Dravid - 160 Ricky Ponting - 162 Sachin Tendulkar - 163

Fastest to 13000 Test runs in terms of innings:

    Sachin Tendulkar - 266 Jacques Kallis - 269 Ricky Ponting - 275 Rahul Dravid - 277 Joe Root - 279

Among active cricketers, Root is the only player to reach the 13000-run mark in the longest format of the game. So far, Root has scored 13006 runs in 153 Tests with the help of 36 centuries and 65 half-centuries.

Joe Root fails to score big but England is on course to post a huge total

While Joe Root created history on the opening day of the ongoing Test, he could not convert his start into a big score. The batting star departed after scoring 34 runs off 44 balls. He was dismissed by Blessing Muzarabani.

Even though Root failed to score big, England finished the day on a commanding total of 498/3. Of the three England players who were dismissed on the opening day, Root was the only one who could not score a century.

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett gave the hosts a solid start by adding 231 runs for the opening wicket. The partnership ended when Duckett departed after scoring 140 runs off 134 balls. It was followed by another big stand as Crawley and Ollie Pope added 137 runs for the second wicket.

Sikandar Raza broke the stand by dismissing Crawley for 124 runs. After Duckett and Crawley, Pope completed his century too, and was unbeaten on 169 at stumps. Harry Brook (9) was the other unbeaten batsman.
