AMERICANS heading to Europe are being told they could be attacked without warning, just for being in a crowd.
Two popular tourist spots have been added to the US State Department’s travel advisory list.
Each country has been marked under Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, raising alarms for travelers.
Germany and Spain, both major hot spots for tourism, are now flagged for risks including terrorism and unrest.
The updated travel advisory for Spain was issued by the US State Department on May 12, while the advisory update for Germany was issued one day later on May 13.
The updated warnings say Americans could be targeted at public places any time, with no advance notice.
“Terrorist groups and lone actors remain a constant threat in Germany and Europe, attacking people in public locations with knives, small arms, rudimentary explosive devices, and vehicles,” the advisory read.
The advisory noted that “such attacks may occur with little or no warning and target” with tourist locations, airports, train and bus stations listed as potential targets.
Shopping malls, government buildings, schools, parks and places of worship were also listed as a potential risk for public attacks.
Clubs, restaurants, and hotels have also been marked as vulnerable areas.
Large events, both cultural and sporting, are viewed as high-risk zones.
Meanwhile, the Spain alert added civil unrest as a separate concern for visitors alongside terrorists who “may attack with little or no warning.”
“Demonstrations are common,” the State Department said in its advisory, noting that demonstrations and protests can erupt around political or economic issues, especially during major events or “politically significant holidays.”
The agency urged tourists to avoid protests and large gatherings while they travel in these countries.

UK ADDED IN LEVEL 2 LIST
The US government added the United Kingdom to its Level 2 travel advisory list on May 8, warning Americans to exercise increased caution.
The updated alert highlights the threat of terrorism, including a risk of violence tied to dissident groups operating in Northern Ireland, with the primary targets being police and military.
According to the 2023 Country Reports on Terrorism, the New IRA – a splinter group of the Irish Republican Army – claimed responsibility for a February 22 attack on an off-duty Chief Inspector.
Other groups have also been linked to past violence, including the Continuity Irish Republican Army, which took credit for several attacks between 2019 and 2021.
The report also noted a 2023 incident involving a former UK Government Communications Headquarters employee who attempted to kill a US government worker from the same agency.
