Mario Cristobal has heard plenty of the chatter surrounding Miami recently. However, he’s focused on using that noise as a tool for instruction for his guys.
In a recent sit-down interview with Josh Pate, Cristobal was asked about the narrative that the Hurricanes are utilizing NIL in their recruiting more than anyone else in the country. Cristobal initially said he didn’t see much value in those types of comments or people, but he eventually conceded there is one benefit to the chatter.
Those types of comments allow Cristobal to point out to his players stuff that is “irrelevant” in their careers:
“I can imagine some of the things that are said out there, I just don’t know what value that type of noise or people really have,” said Mario Cristobal. “I guess the value lies in the fact that you can take your son, or you can take a prospect, and you can sa,y ‘You see all that noise and trash? There’s an example of what’s irrelevant in life’.”

— CBS Sports College Football ? (@CBSSportsCFB) May 19, 2025Regardless of the methods, Miami’s recruiting is doing just fine after the 13th-ranked high school recruiting class for 2025 to go along with a transfer group that ranks 3rd in the nation, according to 247 Sports. The Hurricanes also recently landed Jackson Cantwell, the nation’s No. 1 prospect for 2026, in a top-10 recruiting class for Cristobal.
Immediately after his commitment, Cantwell pushed back on certain NIL narratives surrounding his pledge to Miami. Certain reports circulated that Cantwell’s decision revolved around the largest NIL package.
“I think there’s a false narrative that’s why I’m choosing (Miami),” Cantwell said. “I think relationships won out for Miami; that’s kind of what did it for me. They spent the most time with me.”
