No one likes being told they're making mistakes, regardless of their makeup skill level. But it happens to everyone—even top makeup artists and influencers. Whether it's using a foundation that doesn't match your undertone or confusing contour with bronzer (one is cool-toned, the other warm), small slip-ups are normal and nothing to stress about. They're simply part of the learning and experimentation process. Mistakes are a good thing—they mean you're trying new things.

Still, it can be helpful to get ahead of any issues to make your makeup application as seamless as possible. This is especially true if you're over 50 because there might be some unique concerns you want to keep an eye on, such as dry spots and fine lines. Makeup artist Carmindy Bowyer is here to the rescue. She took to her social media to share her "top five makeup situations [she] would never do over the age of 50." Some of them might surprise you!

This one was especially shocking! "Setting spray is an alcoholic mist that's supposed to set your makeup," Bowyer says. "When you have older, mature skin, this is just going to dry you out and suck all the hydration out of your skin." We say, if you really love setting spray, look for ones sans alcohol, such as Laura Gellar Spackle Mist and Kosas Cloud Set.

    2. Wearing Long-Wearing Lipstick

"If it's going to be long-wearing, that means it's adhering to your and sucking every bit of moisture out of your lips," Bowyer continues. "You've seen those people with the crusty lip situation!" She recommends "a nice, creamy, hydrating pigmented lipstick" like her Universal Love Lipstick.

"Waterproof mascara is almost impossible to get off at night," she says. "And you're going to be pulling and tugging and rubbing to get it off, which is going to break you're already thinning lashes." She prefers a tubing mascara because "it won't smudge, but it's easy to wash off at night." Carmindy Beauty makes one, and we also love Tarte Tartelette Tubing Mascara.

    4. Baking Under Your Eyes

While you might see teen and 20-something influencers on social media baking their makeup by applying extra powder in the areas they want to brighten and set the longest. Bowyer says to skip it. "You're going to look like a creasy, concrete block of cracky mess." Just a light dusting of powder should be enough!

    5. Using Cream Eyeshadows

This is a controversial one, but Bowyer explains: "Our lids don't look like they once used to, so creams are just going to slip and slide and settle into fine lines and creases." She says to look for a "sheer, lightweight, watercolor eyeshadow powder," such as her Be Mesmerizing Eyeshadow Trio.
