Cal Raleigh led off the seventh inning with his 15th home run to break a tie for the Mariners, who beat the Padres 4-1 Saturday.
Gavin Sheets gave San Diego a 1-0 lead with a two-out homer — his sixth — in the fourth off Mariners starter Emerson Hancock, but that would be all for the Friars on a cool and wet night at Petco Park.
Riley Tellez, who homered in the opener, hit his eighth on Nick Pivetta’s first pitch in the fifth to tie it.

— San Diego Padres (@Padres) May 18, 2025The Padres had a golden opportunity with one out in the bottom of the inning and the bases loaded, with their hottest hand, Manny Machado, coming up. But Hancock struck him out on three straight fastballs, then gave way for Gabe Speier (2-0), who fanned Jackson Merrill to keep it 1-1.
Raleigh put his team ahead while tying the Yankees’ Aaron Judge for the American League home run lead. Raleigh’s homer was the first allowed by reliever Adrian Morejon (1-2) this season.
“He got ambushed by a guy that just kills us,” manager Mike Shildt said. “I mean, you know, if Cal Raleigh could miss a trip every now and again to play the Padres, that would be great.”

— Seattle Mariners (@Mariners) May 18, 2025Raleigh and Donovan Solano drew one-out walks on both sides of a bunt single by Randy Arozarena off reliever Alek Jacob in the eighth. Dylan Moore singled to left for to give the Mariners the insurance runs.
Xander Bogaerts had three hits in the losing effort as the Padres dropped their third game of the six-game home stand that ends Sunday. Seattle has won two straight to begin a 10-game trip.
Hancock allowed one run on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Pivetta gave up one run on two hits in six innings.
“Another solid, really good outing from Nick,” Shildt said.
The win gives the Mariners the advantage in the annual interleague series between the teams that since 2011 has playfully been known as the Vedder Cup, a reference to Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder.
The band’s frontman – actually a Chicago Cubs fan – spent some formative years in San Diego before moving to Seattle in 1990. The two teams formalized the competition in March, with the winner getting a trophy featuring a guitar provided by Vedder.
He stepped up because the Padres and Mariners did too, by supporting the EB Research Partnership, a charity co-founded by Eddie and Jill Vedder to fund research to discover treatments and cures for a genetic skin disorder, Epidermolysis Bullosa.
The teams play again in Seattle Aug. 25-27.
Michael King (4-1, 2.32) has the chance to send the Padres off on a winning note, against Bryan Woo (4-1, 2.84) in the series finale. The Friars hit the road to face Toronto and Atlanta in the coming week.
