Val Lopez scored the winning run in the seventh inning on a passed ball to give Villa Park an 8-7 victory over Bishop Amat in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Thursday at Villa Park High.
Val Lopez and Nate Lewis hit back-to-back singles for Villa Park (23-6) to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning. After both runners advanced to scoring position, Bishop Amat intentionally walked Jake Nobles to set up a force out at home plate. On the third pitch of the ensuing at-bat, Val Lopez, who entered the game as pinch runner, scored on the passed ball.
Nobles pitched three scoreless innings of relief for Villa Park to earn the win and added three strikeouts. He hit a two-run home run in the second inning and drove in another run with a bases-loaded walk.
Lewis went 2 for 4 with one RBI and Pepperdine signee Shawn Romero went 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI.
Villa Park will play Aquinas on Tuesday in the second round.

Laguna Beach 7, Summit 5: Laguna Beach scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Summit of Fontana.
Lucien Reed hit an RBI triple in the seventh and Dylan Yencho drove in a run in the seventh with a double.
Thomas Gonzales pitched four innings of relief to earn the win and added five strikeouts. Becker Sybirski had a double with two RBIs for Laguna Beach (25-3). The Breakers will host Norco in the second round Tuesday.
El Dorado 5, Ayala 0: Logan Steenburgen pitched a five-hit shutout for El Dorado against Ayala of Chino Hills.
David Domingo hit a home run for El Dorado (21-8) and Jake Vanderzee went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs.
El Dorado will play Crespi in the second round Tuesday.
Los Alamitos 4, La Mirada 2: Tristan Dalzell and Logan Anderson had strong pitching performances for Los Alamitos in a road win over La Mirada.
Dalzell, a Long Beach State signee, allowed three hits, two runs and had eight strikeouts. Anderson struck out the side in the seventh inning to get the save.
Tyler Smith and Nate Walker drove in two runs each for Los Alamitos (18-9-2) and Damon Valdez hit a double.
Los Alamitos baseball knocks off La Mirada in first round of Div. 1 playoffs
Arcadia 2, Aliso Niguel 1 (11 innings): Cooper Flemming pitched eight excellent innings for Aliso Niguel, but the Wolverines’ bats struggled in the extra-inning loss to Arcadia.
Flemming, a Vanderbilt signee, allowed six hits and one run with nine strikeouts in eight innings. Brandon Schaff had two hits and drove in the lone run for Aliso Niguel (22-7). Carson Etnire and Jason Orwat each had two hits.
Los Osos 7, Cypress 5: Cypress scored three runs in the seventh inning but fell to Los Osos.
Gary Hennessy had two hits including a double and drove in two runs. Tyler Vladic went 2 for 4 with one RBI and John Short drove in a run. Garret Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with a walk for Cypress (18-11).
Division 3:
San Juan Hills 3, El Toro 2: Clay Riggs hit a walk-off single in the seventh for San Juan Hills in a first-round win over Sea View League foe El Toro.
Riggs went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for San Juan Hills (15-13). Hudson Doss had two hits, including a double, and Evan Meeker drove in a run.
Drew Nelson allowed no earned runs in four innings with six strikeouts and Anthony Rasic pitched three scoreless innings of relief.
Anthony Chapuis pitched the entire game for El Toro (14-15) and had a double with two RBIs at the plate. Nacho Gonzales had two hits with a double.
Fullerton 8, Wilson 2: Declan Fitzgerald allowed one run in six innings with nine strikeouts for Fullerton.
Zach Fany went 3 for 4 with a stolen base, three runs scored and one RBI for Fullerton (19-9-1). Freshman Sammy Chacon went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Malachi Meni went 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI. Mason Park and Luke Gonzalez each had run-scoring singles.
Fullerton will play at Paraclete in the second round Tuesday.
Costa Mesa 5, Kaiser 3: Costa Mesa scored five runs in the sixth inning in its win over Kaiser.
Will Clark went 2 for 3 with a stolen base and two RBIs. Aiden Comte went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Wyatt Rottschafer went 2 for 3, drove in a run and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.
Costa Mesa (23-6) has won eight consecutive games and will play San Juan Hills in the second round Tuesday.
Beckman 13, Temescal Canyon 4: Nick Molina pitched five innings and went 2 for 5 with a double and three RBIs for Beckman.
Gus Powell went 3 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs and Anton Lee went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Aaron Duran had a double with two RBIs in his lone at-bat and Mark Terry drove in three runs.
Beckman (16-13) will host Cajon in the second round Tuesday.
Division 5:
Northwood 10, Loara 0: Paul Grossman had a stellar day on the mound and at the plate for Northwood (13-15-1).
Grossman allowed just three hits in five shutout innings with six strikeouts. He went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.
Carter Liu went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Joseph Harper drove in two runs. Koji Yoshimizu had two hits with a triple and a stolen base and Ethan Tsou had two hits with a triple.
Laguna Hills 6, Tahquitz 2: Nic Park allowed one earned run in six innings with seven strikeouts for Laguna Hills.
Jake Kahl had two doubles and one RBI for the Hawks and Christian Sigaty had a double with one RBI. Nate Medina went 2 for 4 with one RBI and Kyler FitzPatrick had a double with one RBI.
Laguna Hills (15-13) will host Northwood in the second round Tuesday.
Kennedy 4, Troy 0: Tyler Onofre pitched a three-hit shutout for Kennedy with two strikeouts.
Anthony Vasquez hit a double with two RBIs and Nolan Owens drove in a run with a double. Anthony Hernandez also drove in a run for Kennedy (17-12).
Kennedy will be at Hillcrest of Riverside in the second round Tuesday.
Division 7:
Garden Grove 4, Carter 1: Rohan Ramos had nine strikeouts and allowed just two hits for Garden Grove.
Ramos went 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI. Frank Lam and Issac Campuzano each drove in a run and Campuzano had a double.
Garden Grove (20-9) had six stolen bases and drew nine walks.
The Argonauts will play Milken Community in the second round.
Division 9:
Santiago 14, Public Safety Academy 2: Santiago had 20 hits, seven extra-base hits and nine stolen bases in a blowout win.
Adrian Lucio went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Matthew Rubin went 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs. Isaiah Cortez went 3 for 4 with a double, two steals and three RBIs and Chris Gallegos went 3 for 3 with a double, two stolen bases and two RBIs. Alex Santillano had four stolen bases.
Santiago (8-14) will play the Academy for Academic Excellence in the second round.
Saddleback 17, Ambassador Christian 0: The Roadrunners (14-10-1) totaled 20 hits and scored in every inning but one.
Andy Aguilar was 3 for 3 with five RBIs, Anthony Lopez had four hits, Joaquin Cornejo reached base four times and scored four runs and Ricardo Marquez drove in four runs.
Saddleback will be home against Coastal Christian in the second round Tuesday.
