With the click of a mouse or perhaps the gentle tap of a laptop touchpad, anyone can deposit as much money as they’d like directly into the pockets of the president of the United States.
Trump’s recent run of corruption is quite a stretch beyond what even overzealous Trump-haters predicted. Last month, the meme coin $TRUMP announced that the top 220 buyers of the crypto coin would be invited to an exclusive dinner with the president. The top 25 donors also receive, “an ultra-exclusive VIP reception with the president.”
For the low price of only $5.8 million, someone with the username “REKT” earned the fifth spot and with it, he secured the coveted “VIP” experience. At the other end of the spectrum, “ces” and “Samo” were in a dog fight for the 220th spot, with “ces” edging “Samo out by a measly $11,000.
Using an anonymous crypto scheme to enrich himself was too subtle for Trump though and he decided that he wants his corruption fully exposed to the sunshine as he is planning to accept a $400 million luxury “palace in the sky” from the Qatari royal family.
This is so extraordinarily over-the-top corrupt, that it morphs into comedy.
If you’re a billionaire being investigated for sex trafficking, you can anonymously drop $10 million into any one of the many Trump family-owned cryptocurrencies – the DOJ might suddenly find that it’s “in the public’s interest” to drop the investigation with no further comment. If you’re a foreign government accused of human rights violations, you might be a couple million dollars away from getting rid of those tiresome sanctions.
Weapons contracts, special tariff considerations, American dialectical support within the international community, criminal immunity: Donald Trump just sent out a message to the world that the powers of the American government are all for sale.
According to Fortune, 18 of the top 25 donors are likely foreign given that they use the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, which does not allow American customers. Many of the winners have been confirmed to be foreign either by their own admission or by analytics firms. The trouble here is that the Foreign Emoluments Clause of Article I of the Constitution, which is meant to prevent corrupting foreign powers from influencing the federal government, bans government officials from receiving gifts from foreign states without the consent of Congress.
Given the golden opportunity that Trump has presented to foreign governments, it would be an epic miracle if none of the winners turn out to be agents of other nations. Can you imagine a world where Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping pass up the opportunity to funnel money directly into Trump’s pockets? Only a fool can.
Those defending the President would have us take a foolish leap of faith that Trump will not be handing out favors to those who are enriching him.
But this is all brutally naive. The Qatari government is the very same one that was paying the now convicted, Senator Bob Menendez, in gold bars to advance their interests in the US and this is far from the first time that they have used their oil wealth to manipulate American institutions for their own benefit. When the opportunity presents itself, the Qataris will come calling and they know that the president is elated with his $400 million luxury airplane.
What does history tell us about Trump’s willingness to preserve the purity of the hallowed Oval Office? In February of this year, Justin Sun, a Chinese businessman who was being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission for fraud, invested $75 million into the Trump family’s World Liberty crypto token. Lawyers for the SEC then asked the courts to place a hold on the case.

A reasonable, incremental approach to student loan reform According to Forbes, Sun’s investment allowed the World Liberty project to take off, ultimately earning the Trump family about $400 million. By the way, Sun is one of the “ultra-exclusive private VIP reception” winners. It is beyond unacceptable that the president is not only blatantly using his office to enrich himself, but also selling the powers of his office to foreigners. It will be some time before we can attempt to discern any connections between the donors and whatever favors the president may be repaying with his policy decisions.
The American public should feel assured that the presidency is free from undue influence from abroad and, at the bare minimum, that the office isn’t being treated like a Dollar Tree. Trump’s recent actions of selling access to himself and accepting lavish gifts from foreign terrorism-enabling monarchies should erode any residue of confidence we may have had in his ability to lead the nation. Corruption of this scale requires swift action by Congress: impeach this dirty president before he pawns the White House furniture.
