A POPULAR burger chain has confirmed a massive recipe change taking place this year.
At least three fan-favorite menu items will be affected by the move and could taste different.
While the burgers themselves will remain unchanged, two drinks and a condiment at In-N-Out locations are being updated starting this month, per CNN.
Artificial dyes in its strawberry milkshakes and pink lemonade are being removed and replaced with natural colors.
In-N-Out’s ketchup will also use real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.
But why the sudden change at In-N-Out’s over 400 restaurants nationwide?
A spokesperson told the outlet that it’s part of the chain’s “ongoing commitment to providing our customers with the highest-quality ingredients.”
DYES DENIED
The decision also comes not long after plans were announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr that petroleum-based dyes would be phased out of food and drinks in the United States.
It’s part of the larger “Make America Healthy Again” movement from the Trump administration.
Companies notably use the dyes to help items appear more attractive to consumers with bright colors, but Kennedy has argued that the dyes are effectively “poisonous compounds.”
Despite Kennedy’s comments, the severity of artificial dyes’ impact on human health isn’t straightforward, and there hasn’t been enough research on the subject yet.
There have been studies that determined dyes pass through the body quickly without harm, and others that show potential issues.
High-fructose corn syrup, while not part of the phase-out plan yet, has also been slammed by Kennedy as a “formula for making you obese and diabetic” while speaking on The Great Partisan Shift podcast in September 2024.
Either way, In-N-Out is getting ahead of the curve, and other restaurants are starting to follow.
Steak ‘n Shake also noted earlier in 2025 that it would be cooking its fries in beef tallow instead of vegetable oil as a more health-conscious move.
Popular salad-based chains like Sweetgreen also took extra steps to cut out seed oils, with a “seed-oil free menu” that launched in January.

QUALITY TIME
Aside from recipe changes, In-N-Out also said recently that it wouldn’t rush its expansion plans.
CEO Lynsi Snyder explained on the How Leaders Lead podcast in February that the chain is taking time to “fine-tune” operations before opening more restaurants.
She said it follows a philosophy passed down by her grandfather and In-N-Out founder, Harry Snyder.
“We’re definitely not afraid to slow down and just make sure if there’s a tune-up that needs to take place, everyone knows like ‘Woah, they’re not opening those two or three stores this year because we really need to refocus to make sure that we’re not forgetting the bun toast is supposed to be this way because Harry wanted it that way,'” Snyder noted.
This is also noted on the In-N-Out website.
“Because of a rigorous commitment to quality and freshness, the company only builds stores that are located within a close proximity of their four in-house patty-making facilities,” a statement reads.
“This ensures it will never take more than a single day’s drive for their own trucks to deliver fresh ingredients to each restaurant.”
In-N-Out’s locations currently reside in eight states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, and Utah.
California holds the most at 280, around 67% of all In-N-Out restaurants.
A burger chain dubbed “better than McDonald’s” by some consumers is also making a serious update this year.
Another opened its first new restaurant in over 10 years, and 200 more are on the way.
