(KRON) -- A man is dead after being shot by three police officers Wednesday evening in South San Francisco, according to authorities. The South San Francisco Police Department said he pointed what was believed to be a firearm at officers before being shot.
Officers responded at 7 p.m. to the 300 block of Oyster Point Boulevard near the San Francisco Bay on multiple reports of a man in his 40s attempting to break into a public restroom with a metal object and yelling obscenities. Arriving officers found the suspect, who was not identified as of Thursday, still trying to break into the restroom, police said.
After SSFPD officers contacted the man, he ran off with “what appeared to be a firearm in his hand,” according to the department. Officers chased after him along a trail where many members of the public were said to be walking. Other law enforcement agencies arrived at the scene to assist SSFPD.
Police used less-lethal force in an attempt to gain control of the man, but authorities said it was “ineffective.” The man then allegedly pointed the suspected firearm at officers before being shot by two SSFPD officers and one San Bruno Police Department officer.
The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
It was later determined that the suspected firearm was a replica, police said.
The California Department of Justice is investigating the fatal police shooting. The involved officers were placed on paid administrative leave per protocol, according to SSFPD.
