Drivers blast gas stations for ‘bait & switch’ trick that tacks on extra $1 per gallon for using popular payment method

FUMING drivers have slammed gas stations for tacking on an extra charge when filling up gas.

Some gas stations are implementing a “bait and switch” trick that adds an extra dollar per gallon onto your bill.

Drivers have noticed that some gas stations have added an extra $1 charge for those who pay for gas using a credit card.

Although it’s perfectly legal, drivers are outraged that they’re being asked to cough up additional money for using a common payment method.

“Had to 1 star a gas station I pulled up to that was $1 over their posted price with card and I saw the sign on my pump (which happened to be the ONLY pump that even had this message) saying to come inside for your HUGE cash discount on regular!” said one Facebook user.

“It was only on regular, mid and premium were a dollar over the regular prices everyone else uses.”

Businesses that do charge the extra fee are required to inform customers of the surcharge in advance, although many customers claim gas stations don’t use enough signage to alert drivers.

One driver said that if they see a gas station charging extra for a credit card transaction, they avoid that rest stop in the future.

“I protest the extra charges since COVID. some one started charging and three or four years later most places are doing it I tend not to participate in with these establishments and I tell them so,” they wrote.

“But also I don’t think the states realize that the cash they (business) collect is not necessarily going to the state for taxes.”

“And that’s why I avoid those type of gas stations,” another echoed.

In some states, like Florida, drivers argue that gas stations have been hiding the fee, leaving customers with a hefty bill after they’ve filled up their vehicles.

One Florida driver, Pat Igo, claimed that it cost him $3,000 per month to fill up 12 trucks that he operates.

“I noticed this little box at the bottom,” Igo told WPTV. “And it didn’t match the price that was out on the street.”

The driver asked the station manager whether the extra $1 was a misprint, but the manager confirmed that drivers paying with a credit card would have to abide by the surcharge.

Igo advises his employees, who drive the trucks around, not to frequent gas stations that implement this extra charge.

    High gas tax states

Here is a list of the states with the highest gas taxes (including local fees and federal excise taxes) in the US:

    1. California: $0.86 per gallon 2. Illinois: $0.84 per gallon 3. Pennsylvania: $0.80 per gallon 4. Indiana: $0.74 per gallon 5. Washington: $0.70 per gallon 6. Michigan: $0.66 per gallon 7. Maryland: $0.65 per gallon 8. New Jersey: $0.60 per gallon 9. North Carolina: $0.59 per gallon 10. Virginia: $0.57 per gallon

“There should be a law showing what they’re going to charge you if you use a credit card,” he added.

Several drivers said there are certain gas station companies that don’t use this controversial payment tactic.

“Shell, Chevron and Marathon on Northlake and prosperity Farms don’t charge extra,” said one driver.

Other drivers pointed out that many industries have adopted this standard, including the hospitality industry for services like lodging, food, and recreational activities.

“It’s called a surcharge and everyone is starting to do it,” they commented online.

“Even Drs offices. If you do not want to be charged use your debit card or cash. It is legal in most states.”
