Tennessee strikes for back-to-back home runs against Belmont before weather delay

Tennessee is feeling the sting of losing 2 out of 3 games against in-state rival Vanderbilt in their final home series of the regular season.

The Volunteers have one more home game remaining at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, and that’s against another in-state foe in Belmont on Tuesday. And both teams have been forced to dodge raindrops during the evening as the game went to a weather delay in the bottom of the 2nd innine.

Before that, the Vols struck for a few fireworks.

With both teams scoreless in the bottom of the 2nd and the bases loaded, Gavin Kilen brought in a run on a groundout to 2nd base to put Tennessee ahead. Then, with 2 outs, Andrew Fischer stepped up and launched a 3-run home run to right field, his 21st of the season, to make it 4-0.

The Vols weren’t done: on a 3-0 count, Hunter Ensley made it back-to-back home runs as he drilled one to left field to up the lead to 5-0.

Despite Tennessee sitting well off the pace of their 60-win championship season in 2024, it’s still in good shape to make the NCAA Tournament as an at-large team. The No. 17 Vols wrap up their regular season with a 3-game series at No. 8 Arkansas starting Thursday.
