A bizarre incident took place during an unofficial ODI between Bangladesh A and New Zealand A in Sylhet, and it grabbed attention from the cricket world. Bangladesh A wicketkeeper, Nurul Hasan, who was positioned awkwardly behind the stumps, conceded a five-run penalty during the unofficial ODI match.
Nurul Hasan has significant domestic experience, having featured in 157 List-A games, 214 T20s, and 109 First-Class matches. He last played for Bangladesh in 2023 at Mirpur. Across 64 international appearances in all formats, Nurul has scored over 1,000 runs and effected more than 50 dismissals as a wicketkeeper.
The incident took place in the fifth over of New Zealand A’s chase of a 228-run target. With the score at 35 without loss, pacer Ebadot Hossain delivered a ball outside off stump to opener Rhys Mariu, who let it go.
However, Bangladesh A captain Nurul Hasan had positioned himself much wider than the standard wicketkeeping spot, closer to first slip and completely out of line with the stumps.
The ball struck the helmet placed on the ground behind the stumps, resulting in an automatic five-run penalty against Bangladesh A. Mariu and his batting partner Dale Phillips appeared momentarily confused, but they went on to complete a single while the ball rolled away toward short third man.

Umpire to Award Five Penalty Runs to Batting Side Under MCC Law
According to MCC Law 28.3, a ball that hits a helmet placed on the ground by the fielding team is declared dead, and five penalty runs are immediately awarded to the batting side.
"If the ball while in play strikes the protective helmet the ball shall immediately become dead and he umpire shall signal No ball or Wide to the scorers, if applicable or umpire shall award 5 Penalty runs to the batting side."
The same situation unfolded during the match, with the umpire enforcing the rule after the ball hit the helmet behind the stumps. The unusual moment quickly gained traction across the cricketing world, drawing a mix of amusement and criticism toward Bangladesh A's bewildering fielding setup.
New Zealand A Seal Consolation Victory in Final Unofficial ODI
New Zealand A secured a consolation win in the final match of the unofficial ODI series, chasing a 228-run target against Bangladesh A with four wickets in hand. Rhys Mariu and Dale Phillips added a 77-run stand for the opening wicket. Mariu scored 33 before being dismissed in the 12th over, while Phillips added 34.
Nasum Ahmed, Mosaddek Hossain, and Nayeem Hasan each took two wickets to reduce New Zealand A to 166 for 6. The visitors held their nerve, and a crucial unbeaten 65-run stand between Dean Foxcroft (36* off 43) and Zakary Foulkes (28* off 42) sealed the win with 10 balls remaining.
The five penalty runs awarded after a bizarre helmet incident involving Nurul Hasan proved significant in a tightly contested chase. Bangladesh had already won the series 2–0, but New Zealand A avoided a whitewash. Nurul’s century in the second match had secured the series for Bangladesh.
