HOME experts have revealed the worst mistakes you’re making that could be costing you a fortune.
So, if you want to keep your home in tip-top condition and save yourself from writing a cheque, keep reading.
Experts at Taste of Home have shared the jobs to do (and the ones to leave to professionals) to keep it in good repair.
Many homeowners love open-plan living.
And while many homes can have their interior walls knocked out, it’s best left to the professionals.
In lots of older frame houses, inside walls can be load-bearing walls.
Accidentally taking one out means the second floor might end up falling onto the first.
If you’re not sure, have an inspector determine if it’s safe to remove the wall.
While it might sound like a chore, checking your thermostat regularly can help save you a ton of cash.
Simply reset your thermostat at night and when you are away from home.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “You can save as much as 10 percent per year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back seven to 10 degrees for eight hours a day from its normal setting.”
Now the weather is getting hotter, you’ll be tempted to turn the AC on.
But if you find it’s not working after it’s been off for months, hold off calling a technician.
Instead, move the thermostat mode switch from ‘Cooling’ to ‘Off’ and move the fan switch from ‘Auto’ to ‘On.’ Let the blower run for at least 30 minutes or until there’s good airflow at the registers.
Then turn the AC back on to test it. If it keeps working, you’ve fixed the problem yourself!
Every so often, you’ll have to give your ceilings a lick of paint to keep them looking fresh.
What is a tiny home?
Technically, a tiny home is any house measuring under 400 square feet.
Many tiny homes are built on trailers so they can be towed anywhere, and some are converted from old school buses or vans.
Each state has its own rules about tiny homes, but, generally, they are not subject to the same taxes as regular homes.
However, Alaska, Iowa, Louisiana, North Dakota, New Jersey, New York, Wisconsin, and West Virginia have made tiny homes illegal as permanent dwellings.
It often goes everywhere, so try wearing old clothes when completing the task and an old hat to keep your hair covered as well.
If you fertilize your lawn at the wrong time, you’ll be wasting your time and money.
To keep your grass looking its best, fertilizer has to be applied at certain times during the growing season, not when you have time to do it.
If your gas clothes dryer isn’t doing its job, the culprit is often the lint-clogged vent.
Use a vacuum and/or a brush to clean out the lint and the dryer should work fine, unless you accidentally shut off the gas valve.
Instead of calling out a technician and wasting hundreds of dollars, reach in and turn on the valve.
