Maple Leafs’ Max Domi fined for hit on Panthers’ Aleksander Barkov ...Middle East

Fallout from the end of a physical Game 4 between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers has begun.

Maple Leafs forward Max Domi was fined $5,000 for his late-game hit on Aleksander Barkov, the NHL’s player safety department announced on Monday.

The fine is the maximum allowable under the CBA.

In the final seconds of what ended up as a 2-0 win for the Panthers to even the second-round series at 2-2, Domi bumped Barkov from behind, sending him into the boards near a crowd of players battling for a loose puck. The Panthers immediately took offence to the incident as a scrum ensued and fists began to fly amid the chaos.

Barkov was not injured on the play, head coach Paul Maurice said.

Florida centre Sam Bennett said he thought Domi’s hit was par for the course since “it’s been a physical series, so I expect more of that.”

When Toronto head coach Craig Berube was asked about the matter on Monday, he instead shifted focus to another play.

“To me, the (Dmitry) Kulikov hit on (Mitch) Marner was 10 times worse,” said Berube about the Panthers defenceman clipping the Leafs forward with an elbow to the head earlier in the game without receiving a penalty.

Action between the two sides resumes on Wednesday as Toronto hosts Florida for a pivotal Game 5 on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT.
