A group of California Republican legislators have penned a letter to President Donald Trump encouraging him to pursue sensible immigration policies. If Trump really wants to Make America Great Again, he’d listen to them.
“We respectfully ask you to focus deportations on criminals, and to support legal immigration and visa policies that will build a strong economy, secure our borders, and protect our communities,” pleads the letter from Sens. Suzette Valladares, Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh and Brian Jones, as well as Assemblymembers Heath Flora, Diane Dixon and Laurie Davies.
The group of Republican lawmakers rightly pushes back against workplace raids and immigration enforcement and urges that immigration enforcement be targeted at criminal aliens.
According to David Bier at the Cato Institute, federal immigration authorities under Trump have mainly been arresting people without criminal records. For the current fiscal year, 65% of those arrested by ICE had no criminal convictions and 93% had no convictions for violent offenses.
In a world of finite resources, it seems bizarre to squander finite resources on people who are not violent or serious criminals. If one was to prioritize immigration enforcement reasonably, one would almost certainly prioritize those with serious criminal records rather than, say, people who have been living peacefully and productively.
The seemingly arbitrary immigration enforcement of the Trump administration has had a chilling effect on employers, notes the group of Republican lawmakers.
“We have heard from employers in our districts that recent ICE raids are not only targeting undocumented workers, but also creating widespread fear among other employees, including those with legal immigration status,” they explain. “This fear is driving vital workers out of critical industries, taking California’s affordability crisis and making it even worse for our constituents.”
To remedy this, the lawmakers offer very practical suggestions. This includes an appeal to Trump to direct ICE and the Department of Homeland Security to focus enforcement on criminal immigrants. This is perfectly reasonable.
They also suggest that Trump lead an immigration reform effort to give “undocumented immigrants with longstanding ties to our communities a path toward legal status.”
They also recommend expanding temporary work programs and streamlining the process to make it easier for employers to hire immigrants when they need them.
This is a sensible set of solutions that would balance law-and-order, compassion and economic interests. It’s also the only reasonable way forward if one is interested in actually solving the problems of illegal immigration.
We applaud the Republican lawmakers for speaking up on this.
