WARREN — A perfect Mother’s Day gift of a hanging flower basket was available at the Packard Park Greenhouse on Saturday, but annual flowers such as petunias and zinnias, lavender, a perennial, and a variety of tomatoes and peppers also were offered for purchase. The volunteer nonprofit, Packard Park Greenhouse Growers, ran the plant sale. A second sale will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17 at the Packard Park Greenhouse, 1701 Mahoning Ave. NW.
Pat Fowler, who originally ran the plant sale that provides money to beautify downtown Warren’s Courthouse Square with hanging baskets and flowers, decided to retire from the endeavor.
“I had volunteered for 19 years and I wanted the plant sale and beautification of the city of Warren to continue,” said Debbie Hayes of Warren, the nonprofit’s current coordinator, who took over the greenhouse project.
Work in the greenhouse begins in late winter and early spring.
“We start the plants in March from seeds and plugs (young plants often seedlings or cuttings),” said Julia Shutt of Leavittsburg, a volunteer with PPGG.
The next stage involves planning on how the plants are displayed in the hot house.
“We are mindful of leaf color, shape and texture,” Shutt said.
A former landscape artist, she said it also shows buyers the flowers that go together in a garden and how to do beautiful things with color, which brings joy.
Volunteers, such as Tiffany Taylor of Southington, enjoyed the work done at the greenhouse and noticed other benefits as a participant.
“I love to garden. I have learned more tips and tricks from the other volunteers. It is a free education,” she said.
The Packard Park Greenhouse Growers plant sale was a family volunteer day for Taylor. Her husband, David Taylor, worked the sale as did their nephew, Indy Meyer, a seventh grader at John F. Kennedy Catholic School.
“I worked for volunteer hours for my Boy Scout Troop 101,” Indy said.
Fellow John F. Kennedy Catholic School student Nadia Williams, a recent inductee into the National Honor Society, also was receiving volunteer hours for her help during the sale. Indy and Nadia carried hanging baskets and flats of plants to customers’ cars after purchase.
“This is such a joyous event, the people working and the people buying the plants are so happy,” Nadia said.
Christy Boone of Newton Falls thanked the students for helping her load her car with her plant purchases. She said she attended the sale to support this local endeavor and let them know that she appreciates the work they are doing to beautify the area.
Joe Safko of Warren has been coming to the sale for a few years. He purchases tomatoes for his garden and his mother’s garden.
“I like the heirloom tomatoes. One of the plants grew 6 feet tall in my mom’s garden,” Safko said.
The nonprofit wishes to spread love, color and joy through their beautification project and Warren officials are very supportive of their work, Hayes said.
