Team India will have a new Test captain soon after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format of the game. The veteran opener announced his decision on Wednesday (May 7).
Rohit Sharma's Test future was in doubt since his dismal performance as a captain and batsman last season. The right-handed batsman failed to lead his team from the front as India suffered heavy losses against New Zealand and Australia. Those two series losses also denied India a place in the World Test Championship final.
The National Team suffered a 3-0 loss against New Zealand at home that ended their long unbeaten run. It was the first series loss at home for Team India since 2012/13. On the other hand, the series loss against Australia was India's first since 2017.
In both series, Rohit also failed to deliver with the bat. He scored only 91 runs in 6 innings at an average of 15 against New Zealand. Against Australia, the veteran batsman managed only 31 runs in 5 innings.

Shubman Gill set to replace Rohit Sharma
The selectors are set to announce the new captain soon. With the squad for the upcoming series against England to be named this month, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel will also name the new captain.
According to reports, Shubman Gill is the frontrunner to replace Rohit Sharma as the Test captain. TOI's Sahil Malhotra has revealed that the youngster is set to be named the new Test captain. He also stated that while another senior player wanted to lead the Test team again, the BCCI was 'in no mood' to look back.

Jasprit Bumrah was also in contention to replace Rohit as the Test captain, especially after leading the team to a historic win in the Perth Test against Australia last year. However, his poor injury record forced the selectors to opt for another option.
Shubman is still very young
Talking about Shubman Gill, the right-handed batsman made his Test debut in 2020 and has been a regular in the team for the last couple of years or so. So far, he has played 32 Tests and scored 1893 runs with the help of 5 centuries and 7 half-centuries.
While Shubman Gill has never led the team in Tests in the past, he is not new to captaincy. In 2024, he led the Men in Blue during the T20I series against Zimbabwe. Earlier this year, the selectors also named him as the vice-captain of the ODI team before the Champions Trophy.
