Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) is pushing back against claims reported by New York Magazine that he is behaving erratically, driving recklessly and missing regular medical check-ups, which have raised questions about whether the freshman senator will serve out his six-year term.
Fetterman told CNN’s Manu Raju in a recent interview that his doctors say he is doing fine and slapped down speculation about his mental health and prescription drug regimen as “invasive.”
“My doctors are like, 'John is great,'” the senator told CNN.
“And I am on all of the plan that has always been. And it’s incredibly invasive,” he added. “And why are people talking about anyone’s personal medical things? It’s that, you know, I think most people would agree that’s really, really invasive.”
Fetterman made his comments after New York Magazine reported his former chief of staff, Adam Jentleson, wrote an email to the medical director of the traumatic brain injury and neuropsychiatry unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center raising serious concerns about Fetterman’s behavior.
Jentleson wrote that Fetterman was missing regular checkups, driving recklessly and bought a firearm, raising questions about his fitness to continue serving in the Senate.
Fetterman was admitted to Walter Reed in early 2023 after suffering from clinical depression following a serious stroke he suffered during the 2022 Senate campaign. The senator later revealed he “almost died from the stroke,” which affected his speech and his ability to process auditory information.
Fetterman dismissed the claims reported in New York Magazine, calling the article “a one-source hit piece.”
“It involved maybe two or three and anonymous disgruntled staffers saying just about false things,” he said.
The senator also denied claims that he is suffering from mental issues beyond the depression he revealed in 2023 as “outrageous.”
“My doctors have confirmed that that is not the case,” he said of the claims that he is behaving erratically.
