Former Tennessee WR Bru McCoy announces retirement from football

Former Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy, a key offensive piece during his final 3 seasons in Knoxville, announced late Tuesday evening that he is hanging things up for his football career. McCoy also spent time at USC and Texas during his college career before going undrafted in this year’s NFL Draft.

However, we now know why McCoy went undrafted, with NFL insider Jordan Schultz reporting it was made known not to select McCoy during the draft. Now, McCoy is announcing his retirement based on advice from his medical team.

It’s with a heavy heart but a feeling of gratitude that I share with you guys that I made the difficult decision to medically retire from football. This has been one of the toughest decision of my life, but after careful consideration with my doctors, family and people closest to me, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s the right path for my long-term health and well-being.

As many of you know, I came back and played last year after what could’ve been a career-ending injury. I felt it was my responsibility to myself, coaches, family and most importantly the community I have here in Knoxville to give back for all of the love that has been shown to me. I want to take a moment to sincerely thank each and every one of you who has supported me throughout my journey for it means more than you could ever know.

McCoy joined the Vols’ program under Josh Heupel in the 2022 season, finishing 2nd on the roster with 667 receiving yards and also producing 4 touchdown catches. Unfortunately, he would appear in just 5 games due to an injury during the 2023 campaign.

He would return to the program for his final year in 2024 and once again finish 2nd in receiving for the Vols, this time with 472 yards and adding 2 touchdowns. McCoy’s best game at Tennessee came when he had a career-high 140 yards and 7 catches in a 40-13 win over LSU in the 2022 season.

Best of luck to McCoy as he transitions to the next phase of his life.
