Greg McElroy ranks top 10 RBS for 2025, includes 3 SEC stars

Greg McElroy is in the process of ranking the various positions heading into the 2025 season, and his Tuesday episode of “Always College Football” tackled the running back position.

It’s a key position, though McElroy’s ranking of the top running backs is slim on SEC talent ahead of the season. In fact, McElroy has just 3 SEC stars, and 2 of those players are conference newcomers via the transfer portal.

The first SEC RB that McElroy included is Jaydn Ott at Oklahoma. Ott was among the most productive backs in the country during the 2023 season at Cal, but he struggled with injuries and overall ineffectiveness last fall.

Now, Ott is looking to help rejuvenate the offense under Brent Venables and alongside new quarterback John Mateer from Washington State. If Ott can produce a bounce-back season, it will be a massive boost for the Sooners.

The No. 9 RB for McElroy is another SEC newcomer in Ahmad Hardy at Mizzou. Hardy was severely underrecruited as a high school prospect but exploded with over 1,300 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns as a true freshman for Louisiana-Monroe.

Now, Hardy will try to follow the path and success of Cody Schrader, who catapulted into stardom under Eli Drinkwitz after starring at D-II Truman.

The highest-ranked SEC back entering the season comes in at No. 7 on McElroy’s list, a true indictment of the outlook for SEC RBs entering the summer. That player is Quintrevion Wisner at Texas. Wisner became a star last season with a 1,000-yard campaign after the injury to CJ Baxter, including over 200 all-purpose yards vs. Texas A&M and 100 yards and 2 touchdowns in a College Football Playoff win over Clemson.

While that is a key trio for the SEC, a larger storyline includes the fact that McElroy’s top 6 RBs all come outside the SEC, including his No. 1 pick in Notre Dame star Jeremiyah Love. We’ll see if a player from the SEC can crash that list during the season, but it’s a rough outlook at this current juncture.
