A singer who largely dropped out of the public eye over 20 years ago after having some massive hits made a rare public appearance on Monday, May 5, for the annual Met Gala fundraiser for the Costume Institute.
Lauryn Hill, 49, was seen on the Met Gala red carpet sporting a bright yellow suit with a long train, a large head piece, and a matching umbrella held by a member of her entourage. The ensemble fit in well with the theme of "Tailored for You," exploring the history of the Black dandy. It is a tie-in with the Costume Institute's Spring Exhibit "Superfine: Tailoring for Black Style."
She did not appear to speak with the press during her entrance, which is in line with Hill's generally more reclusive nature.

Hill made a big splash in the music scene in the '90s both with her group The Fugees on the album The Score and with her solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Between those two albums, Hill earned nine Grammy nominations, winning seven.
Since then, Hill has largely eschewed the public eye, and her musical output has been sporadic. She did earn six more Grammy nominations between 2000 and 2006, but several of those were for either collaborations or for her work as a producer or songwriter. She hasn't really released much music in the past 20 years.
In a 2008 interview with People, music engineer Gordon Williams said of Hill, "She didn't have a minute in the day when there wasn't something going on. She wanted to be a regular person. She tried to accommodate everybody all the time."
Hill was in a long-time relationship with Bob Marley's son Rohan Marley, and together they share five children: Zion, 27, Selah, 27, Joshua (known professionally as YG Marley), 23, John, 22, and Sara, 17. Hill also has a son, Micah, 13, from another relationship.
In an interview given to the Los Angeles Times shortly after Zion was born, Hill was talking even then about the pressures of fame.
“There’s too much pressure to have hits today. Artists are watching Billboard instead of exploring their environment…Look at someone like Aretha. She didn’t hit with her first album, but she was able to grow up and find herself.
“I want to make honest music- — I don’t like things to be too perfect, too polished. People may criticize me for that, but I grew up listening to singers like Al Green and Sam Cooke. When they hit a high note, you really felt it," said Hill.
She added, "Having Zion helped me realize what was really important. I had made a lot of decisions for other people more than myself — which women tend to do. A lot of people were against my having a child so early, and at that point in my career. After the success of ‘The Score,’ I was suddenly forced to go off the road because I was seven or eight months pregnant. It was one of the first things I did where I put my happiness first.”
