Florida pulls out of pursuit of key transfer guard, per report

Florida is riding its national title into the offseason, but with the task of replacing some major pieces from its title-winning squad. However, the Gators are reportedly pulling out of pursuit of one key player in the portal.

According to Joe Tipton with On3 Sports, Todd Golden and his staff have opted to pull out of the chase for USC transfer Desmond Claude. Claude was the leading scorer for Eric Musselman’s Trojans this season, finishing with an average of 15.8 points per game.

At this point, Florida already holds commitments from former Miami (OH) guard AJ Brown and former Princeton point guard Xaivian Lee.

The 6-foot-5 Claude began his career at Xavier and blossomed as a sophomore while averaging over 16 points per game. During his junior season at USC, Claude averaged 15.8 points, 4.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds.

Claude shot 48% overall from the floor, but he does have a weakness in terms of 3-point shooting. This past season, he shot just 30.7% from deep, and that is the best mark of his career to this point.

That 3-point shooting could have been a real drawback when it comes to Florida’s pursuit of Claude. As a team, the Gators shot 35.6% from range this past season, and star guards Walter Clayton Jr., Alijah Martin and Will Richard all shot at least 35% from deep.
