Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy said on Sunday he was “shaking” after discovering an antisemitic sign on display at his bar in Philadelphia this weekend and vowed to hold the individuals involved accountable.
In an expletive-filled video that he called an “emergency press conference,” Portnoy, who is Jewish, addressed reports that individuals at Barstool Sanson Street held a sign that read, “F--- the Jews.”
“I've been shaking. I've been so f---ing mad for the last two hours,” Portnoy said in the video Sunday, adding, “I’m gonna f---ing make it my life f---ing mission to ruin these people. Like, I'm coming to your throat. I'm never ending.”
“For the last two hours, I have been on the trail. Trust me, I've been on the trail. You think I'm gonna put up with this sh-- at my bar?” Portnoy added.
In a subsequent video, Portnoy said he had cooled off and changed his approach after speaking to two individuals involved in ordering the sign and after speaking to both of their families.
Portnoy noted the recent uptick in antisemitism and said he’s hoping the incident could be a teachable moment.
“I've been doing Barstool over 20 years. I've had more hate, more antisemitism in the last year, year and a half, than I've ever had doing it,” Portnoy said, noting, “And I'm not talking about politics and what's going on in the Middle East. Just hating groups of people. You hate my parents, you hate my grandparents, sh-- like that. It's crazy.”
“So yeah, my initial reaction was like, I'm gonna f---ing burn these people to the ground, their families, everything, and it's like, you know what? Maybe that's not the best course of action. Maybe I can use this as a teaching moment.”
Portnoy said he is paying for two individuals involved to travel to Poland to visit Auschwitz, where nearly 1 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust. Portnoy said the individuals involved agreed to go.
“So for everyone who wants these kids’ lives to be ruined, I think you can lay off and I think this is a fair f---ing trade,” Portnoy added in the second message.
Portnoy said there were two waitresses involved in the incident, and they were both terminated.
An official statement from the bar confirmed multiple employees were terminated following a full investigation into the incident.
Customers who pay for bottle service at the bar can choose a message to display on a neon-lit sign. According to the bar’s statement, an employee complied with a customer’s request to display the antisemitic message.
“We are saddened, embarrassed, and frustrated by the deplorable actions of a customer and misguided staff acting outside the scope of their duties, which resulted in anti-semitic hate speech last evening at our establishment,” the statement read.
“Unfortunately, several employees ignored all of their training and the organization’s written policies regarding our zero tolerance policy for discrimination and hate. Instead, the employee complied with a customer’s request for a sign in connection with ordering bottle service,” the statement continued.
The bar issued an apology and said it would increase efforts in the future to prevent these actions from repeating.
“We deeply apologize for the role we played in allowing hate speech to transpire, as we constantly strive to create a welcoming and accepting atmosphere for all groups,” the statement read. “This unfortunate incident is the opposite of what we stand for, and we will be doubling down on efforts to prevent such actions in the future.”
Temple University issued a statement Sunday saying the school is investigating the incident after learning that at least one student “is believed to have been involved.” That person has been placed on interim suspension, according to the statement.
Temple University President John Fry called the incident “deeply disturbing,” adding, “In the strongest terms possible, let me be clear: antisemitism is abhorrent. It has no place at Temple and acts of hatred and discrimination against any person or persons are not tolerated at this university.”
