Trent Alexander-Arnold is leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract. Here, we outline the impact he’s had on the Reds and Premier League ahead of a potential move to Real Madrid.
It may not have been the outcome they’d been hoping for, but Liverpool fans do at least now have some closure; Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave his boyhood club upon the expiry of his contract in June, and he’ll likely be departing the Premier League altogether.
The Liverpool and England right-back made his announcement on Monday, confirming in an emotional video posted on to his social media channels that he wanted a “new challenge”.
While the specifics of his next chapter are yet to be revealed, for months now he’s been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, and it would be a shock at this point if he ends up anywhere else.
Alexander-Arnold’s decision will likely be met with a range of reactions. There’ll be some furious that he’s decided he no longer wants to play for his local team; others will understand the desire to test himself in a new country having pretty much won everything there is to win with the Reds.
After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season. This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.I know many of you have wondered why or been frustrated that I haven’t spoken about this… pic.twitter.com/emAw5RvXq0
— Trent Alexander-Arnold (@TrentAA) May 5, 2025Either way, there’ll be frustration that Liverpool are losing one of the very best – if not the best – in his position, with Alexander-Arnold transcending the ‘right-back’ role since his emergence.
Yes, he is a full-back, but he is also so much more.
Over the years, Alexander-Arnold developed from orthodox right-back to a player who could help dictate a match from a full-back berth, his technical quality allowing him to thrive when drifting into more central positions.
It was in those areas where his distribution and ball-striking abilities came to the fore, with Alexander-Arnold arguably possessing technical talents far beyond those of any other nominal full-back in Premier League history.
As such, he became every bit as essential to Liverpool as an attacking force as any normal full-back would be to their team as a defensive presence.
He could yet add more over the final weeks of the Premier League season, but currently he’s scored 23 goals and set up another 86 in all competitions for Liverpool; since his Reds debut in October 2016, only three players – all forwards – have bettered his 109 goal involvements for the club.
That is the headline fact that best summarises what he’s offered to Liverpool, as it is an attacking output that’s far superior to what would be expected of your average full-back.
Those 86 assists put him second only to Mohamed Salah (110) over the same period, with the Egyptian obviously being a forward – and an exceptional one at that.
In fact, there’s a case that behind Salah, Alexander-Arnold has been the most significant player of this successful Liverpool generation, with the club finding itself very much back at the pinnacle of English football.
Since Alexander-Arnold’s debut, he ranks second after Salah for Liverpool appearances (352), starts (318) and games won (234) in all competitions. That’s of course contributed to a trophy cabinet that few Liverpool players have boasted for decades.
Alexander-Arnold’s impact goes beyond just Liverpool, though. His qualities have made him a standout Premier League player, one who’s played a huge role in the transformation of the full-back role.
Among defenders, he holds the record for most Premier League assists (64), for instance, while only Leighton Baines (85) has tallied more goal involvements in the competition than Alexander-Arnold (82). And in fairness to the seemingly Madrid-bound superstar, his haul comes from 148 fewer games than Baines played in the Premier League.
Alexander-Arnold’s 64 Premier League assists has also only been bettered by three players since he made his top-flight bow.
A lot of the danger he’s posed over the years has come from his deliveries into the box. Alexander-Arnold has become renowned as one of the best crossers in the game; he may not have the blistering pace or dribbling abilities of some of the other all-time great attacking full-backs, but few would be able to rival his deliveries.
Looking back as far as his top-flight debut in December 2016, Alexander-Arnold leads the way for successful crosses (481) and passes played into the box (2,602) in the Premier League – and this encompasses players from all positions, not just full-backs.
This will have contributed to the fact he’s laid on 514 chances in the English top flight, a figure bettered by just three players going back as far as Alexander-Arnold’s debut. Those players are Kevin De Bruyne (715), Bruno Fernandes (531) and Salah (525), so esteemed company indeed.
But he’s not just provided a service for others over the years. His ball-striking talents have translated to a few goals as well, and some spectacular ones at that.
Since December 2016, only eight players have scored more goals from outside the box in the Premier League than Alexander-Arnold’s 11, and none of those ahead of him are full-backs. His free-kick prowess has of course helped in that respect, with his six goals from such situations putting him behind only James Ward-Prowse (16) and James Maddison (9) over that same period.
Of course, discussions of Alexander-Arnold’s talents have quite often included certain caveats, namely the questioning of his defensive quality. And it is notable that he holds the record for being dribbled past the most by a single player in a Premier League match (since 2013-14), having been beaten 10 times by Jérémy Doku in February of this year.
But he’s offered so much going the other way over the course of his Liverpool that it’s difficult to read too much into those defensive lapses because, ultimately, they’ve not really mattered.
That aforementioned game against Doku and Manchester City ended in a 2-0 win for Liverpool, for example, and Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool having enjoyed immense success, including winning this season’s Premier League.
Despite what some belligerent critics might claim, he has nothing left to prove in the Premier League and departs as one of the most important defenders in the competition’s history.
